Charles Leclerc admits 'it hurts' to see Carlos Sainz clinch victories amidst the Monegasque’s winless run in F1

Charles Leclerc last won a race in F1 at the 2022 Austrian GP. The Monegasque driver has struggled to take the fight to Red Bull after a failed title bid in 2022. On the other hand, the 26-year-old’s teammate Carlos Sainz has won two races since late last year, including this year’s Australian GP. Now, Leclerc has expressed his honest feelings over this situation.

Leclerc was asked if it was painful to see Carlos Sainz win two races in a span of a few months. The Monegasque driver admitted that it hurt to see his teammate stand on the top step of the podium. Although, Charles Leclerc highlighted that it was important nonetheless as it motivated the Scuderia.

It hurts. And it's a pleasure because for the team, victory is important. Charles Leclerc stated

However, the 26-year-old acknowledged that personally, he did feel bad about the situation. Charles Leclerc confessed that he was simply not up to the mark on both occasions in Singapore and Australia respectively. As such, the Monegasque claimed that he missed out on potentially winning the two races himself.

But we feel bad about it personally, at least I do. Over those two weekends (Singapore and Melbourne), I wasn't up to scratch. I lost those two opportunities. Charles Leclerc explained

Charles Leclerc reveals the reason for losing out to Carlos Sainz

The Monegasque driver was questioned if Qualifying deficit was the reason for him losing out on both races. Charles Leclerc agreed and mentioned that Qualifying has a big impact in the Grand Prix. The 26-year-old cited a wrong choice during the session in Singapore as the cause for failing to fight for victory at Marina Bay.

Oh yes, completely. Qualifying today has a big impact on the race. In Singapore, we weren't far off it. I didn't make the right choice in qualifying. Charles Leclerc noted

Moreover, Leclerc admitted that he had an even worse session in Australia. Ultimately, the Monegasque driver acknowledged that he paid the price on both weekends. Charles Leclerc would now need to bounce back to prove that Ferrari made the right call by giving him a contract extension instead of Sainz. As the Spanish driver will be replaced by Lewis Hamilton next season.

And in Australia I was also a little bit worse. So in those two races, I paid the price. Charles Leclerc concluded

Charles Leclerc used to have an edge over his teammates over one-lap pace. However, it seems that the 26-year-old has work to do to get back to his old form. Nevertheless, the Scuderia has continued to put faith in the Monegasque driver. As such, it remains to be seen how Leclerc performs in the coming races.
