New Jersey Devils Extend Enforcer to Multi-Year Contract
Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

Big Mac is back. The New Jersey Devils announced on Friday morning they have extended forward Kurtis MacDermid to a three-year contract. The announcement was made by Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald.

Kurtis MacDermid‘s contract is worth $3,450,000 total with a $1.15 million average annual value. The breakdown of the contract is as follows, 2024-25: $1,250,000; 2025-26: $1,200,000; 2026-27: $1,000,000.

The Devils GM explained he was working on re-signing the newly acquired MacDermid at the end of the season on an MSG Broadcast on April 15th.

“I think he’s been a huge part of our group and has made these kids and any player a lot more comfortable on the ice,” Fitzgerald explained on the MSG Broadcast. “That’s part of hockey. Building around that core that we have with characteristics that can help our team moving forward.”

The Devils acquired MacDermid via trade with the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and forward Zakhar Bardakov before the trade deadline.

The Devils enforcer played in 16 games with New Jersey and recorded 50 penalty minutes (PIM) and four fighting majors.

MacDermids defining moment with New Jersey came on April 3rd when the Devils invaded Madison Square Garden to face the New York Rangers.

The 6-foot-5, 230 lb forward was at the center of a line brawl with Rangers forward Matt Rempe as a result of a series of illegal checks by Rempe to Devils players.

MacDermid is known to be well-liked in the locker room no matter what team he is on. That’s likely the reason why he received a bit of term at the low price point of a $1.15 million AAV.

Certainly, the rivalry between the Devils and the Rangers has only just reignited, and New Jersey will now have MacDermid for the Rangers — and any other players who might take a run at the Devils’ stars — to answer to.
