Odell Beckham, Jr. reportedly signed with Miami Dolphins over two AFC heavyweights
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins continued to add to their wide receiver room over the past week, signing free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. on Friday to a one-year, $3 million contract worth up to $8.25 million with incentives.

It appears as though the team and the money was good enough for Beckham to pick the Dolphins over a pair of high-profile AFC teams.  According to ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills were also in contention.

"Miami has been talking to Odell Beckham for weeks now," Fowler said.  "They've been trying to secure this deal.  Incentive package, help it get over the top this week.  But I was told Odell was really intrigued by the chance to produce with Mike McDaniel. He feels that that head coach will get him the ball.  Coming off of the Baltimore year, less than 600 yards.  He still has a lot to prove, and talking to people around the league, they believe that if Beckham would embrace being an inside receiver, like a slot receiver type, he could make a killing in this offense.

"I was told Kansas City, that was appealing to Beckham in the process.  Buffalo a little bit as well, but Miami sold him.  They were the most persistent throughout this process to get it done."

The Chiefs managed to supplement their offense at their most glaring need - wide receiver - by drafting Texas wideout Xavier Worthy in the first round of last week's draft.  However, it makes sense the Chiefs would want someone with the experience and talent to add to their group like Beckham.

The Bills' pursuit is also obvious.  Buffalo clearly could have used Beckham, given their tremendously average wide receiver room with Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis gone.  The Bills signed former Dolphin Chase Claypool on Friday.

Beckham could have provided a pretty clear boost to both teams that the Dolphins are chasing in the AFC.  And while the Dolphins committing resources to adding Beckham while still having questions on both lines of scrimmages is a questionable move, it's hard to argue that it's not a significant positive to keep a potential weapon away from the teams you're pursuing by bringing him on board.
