I just got back from the studio that ESPN sent me to for the taping of Outside the Lines this afternoon. I have not watched it, and could not see either Rosenthal or Gonzalez during the taping -- just stared into a camera with a mic on -- so I look forward to seeing how everything looks when I go home and watch it. Here are my initial thoughts and reactions though:

No question in my mind there are any number of media members who are thinking the same thing regarding Ibanez's production. Both Gonzalez and Rosenthal admit to it ("we all harbor these thoughts"). They are using his blog to raise the issue about Ibanez. The Philly papers are covering it now, they're asking the questions they wanted to ask all along but wouldn't and are hiding behind this blogger to raise them. Rosenthal is talking about it now. This created an opportunity for them to cover a topic that will help them sell some papers. It won't die in one day. The Philly Inquirer will probably now have someone start digging around to find out if there is more to it. Guys like Ken Rosenthal can sit and blast Jared, but they will use this as an opportunity to create more headlines down the road. It mushroomed because the mainstream media ran with it, only they're trying to play the good cop - "Can you believe this asshole would write something like that? What a *******, and now I've got to ask you about it, so did you..." If they didn't believe it themselves they never would have allowed themselves to get sucked into the discussion. It's just too bad Jared doesn't get a piece of newspaper sales or ad rates as the mainstreamers sell this story.

Agree completely. Rosenthal and Gonzalez blast bloggers for not having "standards"... but if they have such high standards, then why would they devote column space to a "lowly" blog post like Jerod's?

      Well, couple things here.

One, the basic standards of journalism aren't rocket science, and you don't need a degree from j-school to apply them. When you do a story, you fact check. If you feel like you might be biased or have become biased in the course of doing the reporting, then you have someone else do the fact checking for you. You call your subjects and ask them for their comment and response to the content of the reporting BEFORE you publish. You represent in the reporting, point and counterpoint to things that may be in question. Etc.

As I said -- not rocket science.

Second thing: there are PLENTY of so-called professional journalists in the employ of Big Media who fail to apply even those basic standards. So yeah, when a blogger gets ripped on by some talking head schmucks who may or may not actually possess journalistic qualifications, its suspect.

But if it looks like a sloppily reported story, reads like a sloppily reported story, and is generally regarded as such upon scrutiny, then that's what it is, whether its published by Joe Blogger or ESPN.

Did you guys read Jerod's article? He actually is trying to DEFEND Ibanez from steroid speculation.
    • Jared wrote what tens of thousands of us thought. So he gets crucified by a holier than thou Rosenthal. Rosenthal has an issue with a blogger being able to bring this up without having to cite sources or risk legal repercussions, and he (Rosenthal) can't. It isn't that he feels for the player, if he could do what Jerod did and get away with it, he would. Rosenthal is being a jerk.

      Very smart, gaucho
  • Let's face it -- this is the New World Order. I had the pleasure of seeing Ibanez put up good numbers for a terrible Mariners team last year. I'm happy for him -- he's surrounded by good hitters, in a hitter's park. Pujols had a similar rant earlier in the season, before Manny got jammed up. To have Ibanez have to deal with this in Philly just adds to the perverse relationship between the media, the fans and athletes in that town. Welcome to the City of Brotherly (Cain and Abel) Love, Raul!

Whats the problem here? Every paper in the country has an editorial section where you are allowed to put in print your opinion. A blog is just another form of distribution for opinions...especially in sports.
    • FatMoon
Media needs to get off their high horse before they get knocked off.
  • Well, you can see how much he filled out like Bonds did the past year, and all that extra muscle he put on, right.

If anything, they should be checking his bat for cork or something.
  • i'm a phillies fan, but he has 20 hr's already and only averages a little more than 20 in a year so i completely understand being skeptical of him.

it wouldn't shock me, but it couldn't just be the result of going from AL pitching to NL pitching? the changing of ballparks? actually having runners on base? (sorry M's, i love ya)
  • He came from american league,to national league---he is a professional hitter,he works hard,he know's how to hit----this is baseball fault---if a guy have a great year---look at albert pujols---he is consistent every year, when he is healthy,no argument---keep your head up RAUL!!!!
  • travispatrick
I agree that baseball has some responsibility towards keeping the sport clean, but that doesn't absolve any writer of going out and spewing libelous statements regarding one player with no concrete evidence. Ibanez went after the guy. He has every right to do that. You can't make some accusatory statement from behind a veil of ones and zeros and attempt to pass it off on major league baseball's shortcomings. One guy tried to single out Ibanez, and Ibanez went back to single out that one guy. It's not an indictment on bloggers or fan journalism. It's an indictment on speculative and unfounded accusations.

Did you read what Jerod wrote on his blog? He was trying to support Ibanez and said he believed he was NOT on steroids. It was the Philadelphia Inquirer who twisted his words. Ibanez likely read the inflammatory Inquirer column, not Jerod's post.
  • Go back to your parents basement and come up with something else you bum. Fake story Raul on Roids BAD....Fake story Eagles trade for (insert WR here) GOOD
  • Somemo32
This is just ignorant. It's like the journalists are upset with the blogger for stating his opinion. It's no different than what we do here on Yardbarker. Now if you are a reputable journalist and you go to a blog and start writing articles based on a blog, that's YOUR fault. They are the ones who need to fact check and the article just talks about suspicion in this era. I think it was a darn good blog and the journalists need to get a grip and find their own stories instead of trolling blogs looking for leads or trying to keep up.

If MLB would get serious about testing guys we wouldn't have to be scolded by pathetic Foxsports writers for being "unfair".
  • gaucho
Philly Inquirer has written something about this for three consecutive days, don't tell me they aren't using Jerod's blog to their benefit. They are responsible for blowing this issue up, even their own writer thinks so, don't blame Jerod or fans for making this the issue that it has become.

Jerod is no victim.I wouldn't be suprised if he's working hard to make this an even bigger issue. It's giving national attention to his blog.Who cares? That's the appropriate reaction. If you don't want to see this story 1000 times by Friday simply say "who gives a flying f*ck?". Because that's how much any of this matters.
  • I agree with FatMoon. I think Gonzalez and Rosenthal were jealous they were scooped by the new guy: Jerod Morris. Whenever mainstream media types speak about "higher standards", I have to laugh because that only applies to their competition -- and never themselves. And as for Raul Ebonez (sp?), "methinks thou dost protest too much." If Raul was totally clean, why would he act so defensive. In fact, in could be said that his misplaced over-the-edge anger is one symptom of steroid use. Keep your hair and stool to yourself, Mr. E! You know darn well when you are in most danger of being tested and will not have the stuff in your system. Just watch those female hormone injections. That is what did Manny in. -- MidnightWriter.
