I just got back from the studio that ESPN sent me to for the taping of Outside the Lines this afternoon. I have not watched it, and could not see either Rosenthal or Gonzalez during the taping -- just stared into a camera with a mic on -- so I look forward to seeing how everything looks when I go home and watch it.
Here are my initial thoughts and reactions though:

One, the basic standards of journalism aren't rocket science, and you don't need a degree from j-school to apply them. When you do a story, you fact check. If you feel like you might be biased or have become biased in the course of doing the reporting, then you have someone else do the fact checking for you. You call your subjects and ask them for their comment and response to the content of the reporting BEFORE you publish. You represent in the reporting, point and counterpoint to things that may be in question. Etc.
As I said -- not rocket science.
Second thing: there are PLENTY of so-called professional journalists in the employ of Big Media who fail to apply even those basic standards. So yeah, when a blogger gets ripped on by some talking head schmucks who may or may not actually possess journalistic qualifications, its suspect.
But if it looks like a sloppily reported story, reads like a sloppily reported story, and is generally regarded as such upon scrutiny, then that's what it is, whether its published by Joe Blogger or ESPN.
