The website FanGraphs provides many new statistics, from plate discipline stats, to replacement level stats to, to win probability added, etc. One of my favorite stats is dollar amount a player would make in free agency. So the current leader for fielders is Evan Longoria, and he would be worth $14.6 million dollars in the market. So what would Mr. Ortiz deserve if he was in the open market right now? $-5.2 million dollars. Yep, he would have to pay someone over $5.2 million dollars for him to add any value to a team in free agency. *If you have a few minutes and like stats, seriously play around in FanGraphs for a bit.

David Ortiz Hits Rare Complete Game

It was a magical sight today at Fenway Park, as David Ortiz put on a masterful display of guts and fortitude to hit a complete game shutout for the Boston Red Sox. After getting off to the worst start of his career in which he has compiled a sub .200 average and only one homerun, Ortiz has been rarely been seen to start or make it through an entire game without getting pulled for...

Simmons on David Ortiz

I love Bill Simmons. He's one of my favorite writers on the planet. Unfortunately, he rarely talks about the Red Sox. He's a Celtics/basketball guy who writes football on the side. So you can imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning to an article about David Ortiz. My favorite part: Red Sox fans refuse to turn against Ortiz. They just can't. They owe him...

The David Ortiz SolutionIf I were the Red Sox - I'd solve to problem with David Ortiz in a very simple manner. I'd start have him practice his bunting.Like the sage Wee Willie Keeler is famous for saying, "Hit them where they ain't." Whenever a team went into a shift on Ortiz - I'd have him drag a bunt down the 3rd base line. If the other team wants to give...

Dennis Jinx-ersley

(Photo from Yahoo! Sports)That game had pretty much everything you wanted in a baseball contest, no? A no-hitter by Beckett taken to the 7th despite some mighty jinxing on Eckersley's part (more on that in a moment), everyone - including David Ortiz(!) - getting in on the hit parade, some excellent defense in service of the then no-hitter, and even a little drama at the end there...

Longoria leaves game with hamstring injury

Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria left Tuesday night's game against Kansas City because of tightness in his left hamstring.

TLBR's 2 cents on David Ortiz

(since I'm seemingly the only Red Sox fan/blogger/Red Sox fan with a blog that hasn't chimed in on L'Affaire du Papi, here goes...enjoy)Here's my two cents on the David Ortiz-not-hitting-his-weight-when-he-played-for-the-Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The Red Sox are screwed.Maybe Ortiz rights the ship, gets himself to a point where he's hitting .250, with 20+ homers...

The Great Rivalry - Short Hops and Quick Thoughts

First, on some news around the league:     Randy Johnson goes for 300: Johnson was one of the most dominant pitchers of our generation, and, frankly, probably the most entertaining pitcher in decades. Coincidentally, he will try for 300 against the Nationals, the franchise that drafted and developed him over two decades ago. He is chalk-full of accomplishments, 5 Cy...

If Rick Telander can wonder, can I?

Mid-May, the esteemed Rick Telander from the Chicago Sun-Times penned a controversial article about the small Ryan Theriot who was on a mini-home run binge (for him). Telander wondered aloud, that given the cloud of PED use enveloping MLB, could we assume that Theriot was doing this cleanly. To wit, Theriot -- no disrespect, but if he's 5-11, I'm 6-12 -- hit two home runs...

Nick Johnson - Thanks, But No Thanks

With Carlos Delgado recovering from hip surgery, the idea of the Mets dealing for Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson has been exhausted by the New York fans and media for at least a few weeks now, and with good reason. Johnson carries with him a career on-base percentage of .399 and OPS of .855, to say nothing of his top-notch defense. He’s had a very productive year with the...

Where's the Excitement?

"Chicks dig the long ball." Well, maybe it was just the synthetic testosterone. The Sox have proved a bit frustrating because they simply have failed (at times) to play the best fundamental baseball. The Minnesota series proves the point. The Sox have far more talent (and payroll than the Twins), yet the Twins' execution and solid play earned them a split.What's...
