Red Sox call up pitcher Chris Smith
Boston has sent outfielder Jon Van Every back down to Pawtucket. Now that JD Drew, Coco Crisp, and Jacoby Ellsbury are all healthy again, there is no need for a fifth outfielder.
They've called up pitcher Chris Smith to take Van Every's place. There wasn't really any other move they could make thanks to the doubleheader against the Brewers yesterday when they had to use almost every pitcher in the bullpen. Smith has pitched 31 innings for Triple-A Pawtucket this year with a 1.45 ERA. He has 28 strikeouts and only 7 walks for a nasty 4.00 K/BB ratio.
