Talkin 'Bout Kimbo Slice Part II

A few weeks back I wrote about Kimbo Slice and his pros and cons and while I didn't think he was the real deal yet I thought he was on his way if he kept training. Then we finally got to see the fight and we all learned what many of you have long suspected-Kimbo was terrible. It was simply an awful fight that Kimbo may or may not have really lost (I don't think Thompson was doing enough damage to warrant a stoppage myself).

I knew going in the Thompson was a bum, but I expected Kimbo to knock him out in the first minute, instead as many of you saw the fight was stopped in the third when Kimbo exploded Thompson's revolting cauliflower ear. Even before that he looked awful, he was completely gassed by mid way through the second round and when he did win he collapsed on the ground and looked like he might have a heart attack. It was pathetic.

So all in all I felt like a moron for ever writing about Kimbo-but then I learned something interesting. A ton of people are now actually interested in MMA because of that awful, awful fight. I was in a sports bar the night of the fight and sitting at the table near me was an older woman who had never even heard of MMA. She started asking me all kinds of questions about Kimbo and at first I thought I was being mocked because of my excitement but I learned from a mutual acquaintance that she had since on her own done tons of research about MMA and Kimbo and consequently was now addicted. Hopefully it is only a matter of time before she starts watching some good MMA and there is another fan out there.

Being totally amazed by this I asked around and the consensus is that people who don't know anything about MMA were amazed and intrigued simply because on national TV he "exploded some dudes ear."

So all in all I have to change my opinion of Kimbo's role in the MMA world. I am no longer of the opinion that he was a waste of time but rather I think he may just be a good thing for MMA. For whatever reason he makes people want to watch when he fights. And while I can't condone watching him fight it can only be a matter of time before those who watch to see him, start to watch real fighters.

The whole "it brings more interest to the sport" point is a good one. But at the same time, it's attracting the people who are interested more in the freak show than the sport. And it's the freak show that causes MMA in general to lose some credibility.

But, still, like I said, there's something to be said about the point you make. I guess EliteXC can be like the gateway drug to bigger and better things like WEC and UFC.

Yea my hope is that since Elite XC isnt on all the time people get into it and then have to watch UFC cause it is on more

He does bring people to the sport but is it the people you would want?

Do you like the drunk idiot at football games swearing at little kids because his Cowboys lost? That's not a fan to me. Either way, I could care less but we all agree over at MMA Chump that Kimbo is a chump and couldn't win against a seasoned fighter.

your right most of them maybe not-butthe people i talked to are the type of fans that you do want to be there, but assuming 1 out of 4 is a good quality fan that is a lot of new fans to the sport.

Then again I try not to talk to the other kind of fan-i just like to be one on occasion :)

its all about the money. people like to see exciting different things. Kimbo brings excitement, although not skillful fighting to the MMA. The promoters saw his popularity on youtube and realized they could make some easy money.

Well here we go part 2 of KIMBO some like him some dont yet all will watch.

What with Kimbo suing CBS because Walter Cronkite didn't show up to do the bout, I guess they're gonna need another network.

When it comes to matchup's experience makes a diffrence. Although Thompson is a bum, he had an advantage with experience, and size.
I think Kimbo went out of his way to make sure his last fight included some ground-work. This guy's obvious strong point involves throwing his hands... But the fact that he decided to go to the ground, to appease everyone else, I think shows that he wants to get better, so that e can be an all around MMA fighter. For that reason alone he has my respect.
Give Kimbo a break, it's his 2nd fight. You have to start somewhere.
