Celts may be the worst 60 win team ever

Read it...........

BOSTON -- It's a simple question.

Are the Boston Celtics championship material?

Even if the Celtics beat Cleveland in Game 7 on Sunday, the answer still could be no.

Somewhere, while attempting to restrain Rasheed Wallace from attacking a ref, the Detroit Pistons must be laughing their asses off.

"These are the guys," they must be thinking, "who are going to beat us?"

After one of the more impressive regular-season runs in recent NBA history, the Celtics barely beat the dreg-like Atlanta Hawks and failed to stomp on the necks of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Boston, it seems, also couldn't perform on the postseason road if Annie Savoy welcomed them to her hotel room.

No team has won an NBA championship without winning at least one postseason game away from home. Indeed, only three teams captured just one playoff road game en route to a title: the 1954 Syracuse Nationals, the 1955 Philadelphia Warriors and the 1964 Celtics. That's the kind of fire Boston has been playing with.

It might be time to reevaluate the team so many of us -- including me -- thought would be practically unbeatable in the playoffs and ride a magic carpet to the NBA Finals.

They still could end up doing just that. If Boston defeats the Cleveland, it matches up well with Detroit, and it remains wholly possible the Celtics could cure their Andromeda Strain of a road virus.

Still they have some glaring road-infused flaws.

Here are 10 serious (and some not-so serious) ways the Celtics could cure their road ills:

10. Play Sam Cassell more. He's experienced and fearless. The raucous crowds don't faze him.

9. Don't buy the Eddie House hype. The Celtics point guard is good off the bench, but I'll still take Cassell, defensive shortcomings and all.

8. In big moments, give the ball to Kevin Garnett. He's the superstar. Let him have the big shots.

7. Rent the movie The Road Warrior. Or any movies with the word "road" in it like Road House. Or The Wizard of Oz because there is a Yellow Brick Road. It's a psychological thing.

6. Stop complaining about the refs. Although game officials didn't have their best day in Game 6 against Cleveland, the Celtics did too much crying about foul calls during the game and somewhat afterward. Championship teams don't let questionable calls get under their skin.

5. Change the road routine. Whatever Doc Rivers and the Celtics are doing now isn't working. Shake up the routine completely. If you already have, do it again.

4. Invite a former Celtic great to speak to the team before every road game. It could inspire the troops.

3. Pull a Lawrence Taylor. In a 60 Minutes interview, the former New York Giants linebacking great said he used to send prostitutes to the room of a key opposing player the night before a game. In the next round, should they advance, the Celtics should send one to 'Sheed.

2. More Glen Davis off the bench. Tends to foul too much but he hits the boards hard and provides toughness.

1. Get nastier. I think this is the biggest thing for Boston. At home, they are a brutal, suffocating force. On the road, they're timid. They need to keep their nastiness when they cross the Massachusetts state line.

We'll discover a great deal about the Celtics in their climatic Game 7 and possibly beyond.

Mostly, we'll get the answer to the question, at some point soon. Is this team a title contender?

I'd say last year's Mavericks are the worst 60 win team ever.

I was going to say the same thing when I saw this title. I'm a Dallas fan and I still agree with this statement after flopping against Golden State last year. If the Celts with the title, then that headline will definitely be useless. I think it already is.

yeah but last year's Mavs didnt have Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce personally since the beigning of this season i thought this team was built simply to have the best record in the NBA and nothing more

True. I think they had high hopes, and most experts were picking either them or the Suns. A lot of people believed they could do it, I just don't know if THEY believed they could.

The difference is Boston's actually won two series, and Dallas won zero.

arent the celtics about to beat the team that detroit couldnt beat last year??

#10 should read: Keep Sam Cassell on the bench and play Rondo more. Cassell is shooting 32% from the field, 28% from three and couldn't guard 79 year old Bob Cousy right now let alone any current NBA player. Steve Irwin was experienced and fearless and that didn't work out too well for him either. Clutch in 1995 does not equal clutch in 2008.

I don't think the Mavs were the worst 60-win team ever. Golden State had their number, did all year, that's all. If they didn't have to play GS, they would've made it to the finals.

As much as I love my Warriors I have to tend to agree with you. And that is what I LOVE about basketball. It is all about the match up. If you don't match up well there is no way around it.

Great post. I have another argument for the worst 60 win team and that would be the Dallas Mavericks from last year. The lost to the 8th seeded Warriors in the first round. That to me would be the worst 60 win team in NBA history because the celtics are still kicking.

Heh, what a silly post.

First off, you can't call the Celts the worst 60 win team in history because of their road playoff struggles. By doing that, you're equating the regular season to the playoffs. If that was true, then you have to throw the playoff road woes out the window. They had the best road record in the regular season.

You'd also have to throw the "Pistons match up better" crap out the window. Celts won 2 out of 3 against them in the regular season. Oh, but it's the postseason now you say? Then the 60-game winner point is moot.

SO MUCH CONTRADICTIONS AHHHH

anyone who doesnt think the celtics have a shot at the title has not watched the celtics play at all this year. They beat the pistons twice this season, so im pretty sure the pistons arent looking forward to playing them. Yeah they have had trouble recently on the road, but they still win the games that need to be won at home. They'll win on the road eventually, just a matter of time. We are winning games without Ray Allen playing well at all. If he can get back on track... blow outs galore

This post gets worse and worse with each subsequent Celtic win this postseason.

Agreed.

Don't you feel dumb?! LA Vs. Boston: 2008 NBA finals!!!!

lol...Boston up 2-0 in against the lakers...

LOL Biggest comeback; Boston up 3-1 IN THE FINALS. 'Nuff said y'all.
