Army rescinds offer to Caleb Campbell & requires him to report to active duty

Remember when Army safety Caleb Campbell was drafted in the 7th round, and everybody stood and cheered because the Army had installed a new rule that allowed graduates to defer their duty for a few years to pursue such opportunities as playing in the NFL. Well, that feel good story is now dead, as the Army has rescinded the offer and Campbell must report to active duty. He may apply for a release in May 2010, but who knows if that will ever be granted. Too bad, but I guess that's a decision you make when you plan on attending Army.

They shouldn't have waited this long to say this.

Yeah, gotta wonder if his CO even knew given that he didn't say anything all last week. It's not like he won't have known who the guy is.

The Army shouldn't have waited this long but no matter what the Lions did with Campbell they couldn't win. If you keep him, you don't let him serve his duties in fighting for the country and if they cut him, he would have to go fight for the country instead of playing in the NFL.

They've told him now that he won't be going abroad and that he's going to coach football. Well why not let him defer and let him PLAY football for a while.
Whole thing stinks like a heap advertising stunt for the Army - free airtime during the draft. Very poor way to handle the situation :-(

they shouldnt have waited so long and they shouldnt have done it at all this is like me telling somebody well come work for me for 10 an hr. and after i hire them going wait ur only gonna get 6 is crap. but once u join the army ur goverment property and ran by politicians i say the hell with that

He gets to coach football at the academy, not exactly a tough gig.
Said Campbell on Sporting News Radio's The Monty Show:
"Before the draft, I was picked to be one of the players to stick around West Point and to help the coaches coach the football team, and just help out with the team. I actually am headed back to New York to start that job, so when they start training camp up at West Point, I'll be helping out there, I'll be coaching this season."

Campbell still hopes to play pro football. "I really think I will be able to one day," he said. "They said maybe in 2010, I'll have the opportunity to try out for another team, and I know the Lions are there and they'd give me the opportunity, and I know that I'll be ready for that opportunity. Whenever they say that I do have do have a chance one day, I'm going to take it, I'm going to run with it, and we'll see what happens."

This is ridiuclous. Just as NFl camps are opening. I hope they reverse this decision becasue it is ridiculous. Its one thing to not allow it all but to make the exception then have him be drafted then take it away is beyond unfair and cruel. Plus the Lions now get screwed out of a player they thought they might have been able to use. I wish Campbell the best in whatever he does in life seems like a stand-out guy to me

The sad point is the decision probable wont be reversed because on the radio show Campbell said that decision came from capital hill or some place high like that because 5 star generals were backing the decision and supported his decision. The part that i dont like is he said they assigned him (like his army duty) to COACH FOOTBALL at Westpoint or at a Prep school in New Jersey. does that make any sense?

Another thing, Westpoint also told him as early as 2 years earlier that he would beable to enter the NFL and play if he got drafter when he asked about it. He said if they told him that he was not able to do that, he was going to transfer to a different school. this kid might not say it but he got screwed.

That's kind of crappy. Personally, I think the Lions should get their draft pick back.

That Bul yet an other reason why not to join the Army

Yeah, if they thought letting him go in Rd7 on national TV was a big advertising opportunity for the Army they just completely killed it.

Either they call him up and send him to active duty within weeks or they cut him loose and let him play. This "You WILL come back and you WILL coach our college team!" is a crock.

This is Bull Shit How is Army gonna let him play footbal and then say he has to go and fight and proberly die in that Iraq shit. Yet another reason to hate Georgia Bush[ as from the song Geogia Bush made by Lil Weezy Wayne]
