It's only preseason, so I spent most of my night watching the Phillies, but I thought I would share some positives and negatives from the Eagles first preseason game against the Steelers, which, despite a last ditch effort by A.J. Feeley, they lost 16-10. Positives: -Donovan McNabb and the first team scored on both of their drives to account for all of the Eagles' points. McNabb looked pretty sharp, completing 10 of 13 for 97 yards and hooking up with fullback Jason Davis for a ...

The first team offense looked good, the rest of the team, meh.

Quintin Mikell looked good but I wish he could have held on to the interception.

Mikell is a hitter.... he looked great I liked that.
I'd like to see more from the first team offense before deciding..... the receivers all seemed to be ready to play though which is what we need.
our Def. looked passive, no blitzing....
Djackson was obviously Kolb's favorite target. I like that Kolb is cautious witht he ball and doesn't throw picks... but he also doesn't look far downfield either(probably too far of a throw for his high school girl arm)

If Kolb is our future we better damn well win one or 5 championships to hold me over for the decade of losing ahead.
    • Eagle_Fanatic
lol! Yeah kolb doesn't do it for me either....did you see avants grab? (didn't count of course) but still good to see He's got skills

yeah it was a great grab only inches from being in but the effort and snatch really impressed me.... we need that effort

Mikell did look good... the defense was very passive, they don't do their usual blitzing schemes until it actually matters.

the 1st team offense was really good hope everyone can stay healthy!!! the second and 3rd team secondary looked horrible!!! they need to settle the lito thing!! the second team frontline was horrible and kris wilson at the end of the game looks like a herniated bear when feely threw that pass to him over the middle!!!! looks like he is the odd man out in the te competition!!! i thought mc dougle looked good and baskett!!! the punt return game still seems weak!!! seems like more of a blocking problem than a return thing!!! maybe segrest needs to hit the books or the road!!!
  • Eagle_Fanatic
i'm not worried about the Defense, every year they are solid!
    • bleedgreen7591
What about the run defense that year with Jeff Garcia?
      • LILEAGLE
        Placard_complete_small
it sucked that year!!! that's why the aints beat us in the playoffs!!!
  • LILEAGLE
    Placard_complete_small
oh!!! the eagles need to stop with the stupid penalties that kill us all the time!!!
  • GoGreen08
Great post! One other good thing is Max Jean-Gilles looked great. There was that one play where he knocked over two of the Steelers. Also, Stewart Bradley looked pretty good out there too, so hopefully he'll be really good this season too.

HE WAS VERY SOLID!!! think the xtra reps had did some good!!!
  • Yeah Q Mikell Did Great i liked his tackles i think on the Second and 3rd string for Defense that played Good was Joe Mays and Studebaker those were the only 2 that proved that they wanted to be on the team an also Mcdougle.... I know this Game Dont Count but i think they should of Switched Kolb an keep him at 3rd because he took a Huge Step Back Now this proves whoever wants the Kolb Era to Start to shut up an wait for a long time cuz that dont help us Aj Feely needs to be our Second.... another thing is that Why did aj feely seem like he didnt care an started to care after the 2 min warning? it isnt bad because we kept the pitsburgh steelers to only 3 FG an 1 td... We could of had won if we had that TD at the end an also the one with AVANT... but oh well lets see how we do against the Panthers...... but we did a good job an we are learning so it aint bad but i was pleased with DJAX 5 yrds 51 yrds.... not bad an Booker did a great job he looks like he gets mad for not going all out its good cuz he doesnt like Mental mistakes he wants to do his all but last yr i know they killed us in the preseason so this was more closer... I loved when Joe Mays got under Limas Sweed an popped him up in the AIR and he fell right down i was like DAMNNNN keep this Guy LOL

How come nobody mentioned how good Buckhalter and Lewis looked? Both guys brought it last night, Buck looks like a man on a mission this year. Hunt and Moats should both be cut...they suck and they're useless to us. I had to keep checking the roster in my program to see who some of these young guys were...gotta get used to the new numbers. You guys had it made watching it at home, they told you everything you needed to know. I wasn't exactly able to turn and ask a Steelers fan who this guy or that guy was. I will say that I heard from several Steeler fans at the game how impressed they were with McNabb and Desean.

Kinda weird seeing Bloom in Black n Gold, it certainly made my girlfriend happy (Steeler fan) since that was the only Eagle player shes ever liked. Just a shame that he'll get cut again! Mendenhall looked like a beast last nite too, I sure hope we can stop him and Willie come September.

      Placard_complete_small
oh and watching it at home just pissed me off..... the commentators were like the 2 biggest Steelers fans alive and they just copped a squat on Philly all day (even though its preseason) and were all of Pitt's dicks..... it was so damn annoying to listen to..... and they weren't up on their other football news for sure..... when Batch went down they were chattin bout getting Pennington but we all knew he was already gone to Miami..... I had to mute the TV before it was all said n done

You must mean the 2 guys from KDKA out in Pittsburgh. I DVR'd the game out there and watched it when we got home, my buddy told me he had to listen to them back home though. They couldn't pronounce any of the names correctly. Calling him Deshea or Deshane Jackson, Jason Avent, Sav Rocco, Jeremy McDougle, among others. Heres the thing you gotta realize about Pittsburgh fans. They're just as passionate as Philly fans (for football and hockey) but they don't know jack about anything going on OUTSIDE of Pittsburgh.
        • squish059
          Placard_complete_small
yeah the mispronunciation of names sucked too.... but their biased point of view was terrible, i mean its a friendly pre-season game for everyone else and these guys acted like a playoff game

anybody want to give mcdougle some props. mikell, jackson, mcnabb, booker all looked good. buckhalter will be solid again this year. hopefully dawk wasnt trying to go full speed, looked really slow. not impressed at all with kolb. looks like another andre ware. hunt not as expected.
    • squish059
      Placard_complete_small
yeah Dawk's givin up a TD didnt impress me.... he looked lost
      • DTRIK19
        Placard_complete_small
He looked lost because there was supposed to be a CB on Holmes...he was coming over to help out since somebody else blew their assignment. Can't expect Dawk to be able to cover Santonio Holmes, he'll lose that battle every day of the week.

Hunt not as expected? Tony was exactly as expected...he sucked. He sucked last year and will suck every year. Maybe he should stop going out in Olde City so much and focus on football.

        Placard_complete_small
when i say not as expected that is for the fans that wanted this guy 2 years ago. saying he will replace buck . dont think so! i have been a fan of buckhalter since he played at nebraska. the guy is solid.
    • illadelphia
yeah i just love all the mcnabb haters and how they all want kolb to be playing....mcnabb is an unbelievable quarterback and he will lead this team to the superbowl this year.
  • eagleman94
man, dont yall go givin credit to who earned it and who didnt. this is PRESEASON. heck, most of them dont even try. they just avoid gettin hurt. its basically a game of football out in the schoolyard. even the kids that dont belong get to play.

That's a pretty dumb view of preseason games. There are a ton of guys busting their butts trying to make the team. And, if players "aren't trying", then tons of people would get hurt.
  • johnb1027
i dont care who won or lost the the game in the preseason that doesnt matter what does is this supposed lights out defense doesnt seam to exist our line was being handled by pittsburgs o-line which was supposed to be
there wekness with the departure of faneca

By watching Kolb and Mcnabb it is easy to see Kolb is not even close to the class Mcnabb is in. Mcnabb lit up the first and second strings while Kolb struggled to make plays. I just don't see any flashes of greatness in Kolb like I do with other young players in the league.
    • DTRIK19
      Placard_complete_small
You can't even begin to compare Kolb and McNabb yet. Kolb's only in his 2nd year and was playing with backup players. He wasn't exactly getting the best protection either. Take a look at McNabb's numbers back in 99, most of us wondered WTF Andy was thinking when he picked this guy. The West Coast offense takes a couple years for QB's to get comfortable with and there is certainly a maturation process. Thankfully we don't need Kolb to be ready right now, but in a few years when we do need him, we can put him under the microscope for sure.

        Placard_complete_small
unfortunatly if mcnabb gets hurt again this year kolb will be the guy. so yea we better be putting our backup qb under the microscope right now. and if he needs more time the he should of remained at #3. btw, i was thrilled they drafted mcnabb after watching him play at syracuse against alot tougher schools then the ones houston plays.
      • BRINKSTER
        Placard_complete_small
Mcanbb may have not had great numbers early on, but he still made plays wtih his arms and legs that were eye openers. Kolb just seems average at best when comparing him to other young quarterbacks in the league.
  • eagleman94
Whateva, enrique .. my point of view is that the guys busting their butts to make it should do that, but we shouldnt be comparing the starters against starters there going out there just having a good time.
  • tomk23
Kolb is garbage Mcnabb will be a better option at QB wen Mcnabb is in his late 30's lol. I liked our 1st team offense. its not that i dont like Djax but i like Sweed but i wuz impressed with Jackson im jus not a big fan of speed recievers especially wen we already have curtis n westbrook as speed recieving options but so far so good... Mcnabb will b back to normal this year WR's need 2 step up n then he becomes the 3rd best QB in the NFL AGAIN

I liked seeing DeSean with McNabb and Kold (not sure if he played with Feely I stoped watching) but I want to know if I missed something or why they didn't have him on special teams too. DeSean seems to be a great kick return guy, did I just overlook him in there or does Reid not know this?
    • DTRIK19
      Placard_complete_small
No, theres one thing you obviously don't know...DeSean is not a KICK RETURNER...he is a PUNT RETURNER. He returned some punts, so you didn't miss something...but you seem to missing something called knowledge. Hopefully this helped increase your knowledge for the next preseason game.

Honestly he has very insecure in his life. Most likely has a very low paying job (if any) cannot get a woman, has very few friends and can only read up to a 6th grade level. He feels better when he knows something someone else doesn't and feels he must push the point. I'm happy I made his day but I do feel very sorry for him.
Go back to school DTRIK learn a trade and maybe you'll find a way to make friends and a little more money.
  • johnb1027
does anyone else feel that with all the moves we made on special teams this year we still looked real bad maybe its the coach not the players in that dept
    • ghucdalus
      Placard_complete_small
i think when the reg. season starts we will see the speed on returns and punts from booker and jackson. booker showed some on one return when he turned it outside. but the problem will still be the blocking and forming a wedge. the speed alone on these guys will give both of them atleast one td. if they can get players to start blocking on special teams lookout! if you know the guy back there has the speed to take it to the house then you might want to make that extra block to help spring him. its not mahe back there now!

I felt as if the second and third strings looked dismal.Kolb didn't get protection from the secondary o-line but he also seemed unprepared to be our QB.Feeley might win the #2 job again which would make Kolb seem even less like the QB of the future. Pleasantly suprised by McNabb and Desean Jackson though. On the first drive I thought "oh no we can't score in the redzone again" but subsequent drives looked more promising.Good to see Akers put some leg into the opening kickoff, too.
