ESPYs Red Carpet Experience

Last Wednesday was the day that the ESPYs were filmed, and the entire day was SO hectic for me. I had to drive around with my broken navigation system to get my ESPY tickets from one hotel, then go over to my publicist's hotel to get the suit that I'd had custom-made. The suit was late, the valet at each place took a good half-hour, and traffic was insane, so my schedule was completely thrown off. On top of that, I was nervous about my first experience as a red carpet correspondent. I kept worrying that I would freeze up and choke, and all I could think was "What did I get myself into?" I finally arrived at the Nokia Theater to meet the Yardbarker folks just as the red carpet opened up. I was sweaty, nervous, and carrying a backpack - basically sort of a mess. On top of that, right as I got there and realized that I had forgotten my tickets for the show, I got stung by a bee. Just some icing on the cake.

Even though things had gone wrong throughout the day, everything worked out great. It was really interesting to see the red carpet from the perspective of the media. Every outlet has their own designated space, but because I was so much bigger than the other reporters, they had to give me some extra elbow room to work with. It was funny, too, because everyone was so surprised to see me there with the media. They kept saying, "Who the hell gave YOU a microphone? Did you steal that?"

I started off a little slow with the interviews, because I was late and didn't have a chance to prepare. All I was told was to be myself and try to work in some of the questions that had been written up for me. I was a little nervous, and for my first interview, I kept holding the microphone up to the wrong person's face while we were talking. After a while, though, I got the hang of it and just started chatting with the guys like it was before or after a game. Once we got talking, it would take me about 10 minutes to actually get to the questions. I was trying to be like Jay Leno or David Letterman and smoothly segue from the small talk to the questions, but I think I could still use a little work on that. Luckily, I wasn't the only one experiencing this for the first time. Hugh Hefner's girlfriend, Kendra, was there as a correspondent, too. When we found out that we were both doing this for the first time, we chatted for a little bit and exchanged interview tips. I'm sure it was all much easier for her, though. No matter what comes out of her mouth, she's got a pretty face and everyone will still want to talk to her. As for me, I need to be a little bit more verbally stimulating or my career as reporter will be over before it even starts.

In the end, everything worked out great. The one thing that was disappointing was not making it in time to actually walk down the carpet myself, but I'm still glad I did this, because it was a lot of fun. The show afterward was amazing, too. It was definitely a SHOW, and Justin Timberlake did a great job hosting. He sang, danced, and really interacted with the audience. At one point he even sat on the floor next to Beckham, grabbed his leg, and sniffed him. And it was hilarious when he started making fun of TO for crying at a press conference. The whole place was dying laughing. Not sure if they were laughing with TO or at him, but Justin must've asked him permission ahead of time because I couldn't believe that he even went there. Another treat was watching one of my favorite artists, Lupe Fiasco, perform with a live band, but my absolute favorite part was the duet that Greg Oden did with Justin. It was funny to see Oden up there singing with Justin and playing the piano.

Well, I hope you guys enjoy watching my interviews, because I really enjoyed doing them. I'll check in again with the Yard soon. Training camp starts Friday, and I'm excited for another season of football!

My interview with Matt Leinart was funny. We had only just met while training at the Home Depot center, but since I told him ahead of time to stop by and let me interview him, he walked up like we were old friends.

Witty Allen!

Braylon Edwards walked up in a suit that he must've borrowed from Michael Jackson. I saw him later on in the night, and he was actually still wearing the same outfit. It was hilarious, because people would keep stealing his diamond tie throughout the evening. Maybe one day he'll let me borrow the outfit.

A soon as these volleyball players came around the corner I told the Yardbarker guys that I HAD to get an interview with them. These ladies may be aggressive when they're playing their sport, but they clean up very nicely. They all looked beautiful in their dresses and heels. The tallest one was especially attractive, and later on in the green room she was getting tons of attention from all the athletes. Her height makes her like a magnet. All the athletes want strong, athletic children, so a woman like that is exactly what they're looking for.

Kellen Winslow was funny because he and his wife had matching outfits. I could really tell that she has a lot of say in their relationship, because she kept answering all of the questions for him.

Thats what I'm talkin about Kellen! A kicker would be President. This man knows what he is talking about. Great question Ovie.

PJ Brown was EXTREMELY tall, and so was his wife. I think I had to fully extend my arm just for the mic to reach his mouth.

Vernon Davis came in just joking and laughing. We work together quite a bit and know each other well, so when I told him ahead of time to stop by for an interview. He'd teased me and threatened to reveal a whole bunch of stuff that he knows about me, but I made a few threats right back, so fortunately he avoided revealing any dirt he may have on me.

1.Lorenzo Neal Chargers
2.Mack Strong Seahawks
3.Ovie Mughelli Falcons
4.Jeremi Johnson Bengals
5.Greg Jones Jaguars

Theres ya Top five FBS the top 3 are definant Hall of Famers

Good interviews I am mad that Matt left you to talk to someone else though and Braylon did look like he stole that suit from Mike Jackson

to be mentioned in the same sentence as lorezo and mack is an honor so hopefully i can get to multiple pro bowls like them starting this year

You Will I voted for you last yearto go to the pro bowl but you didnt go.They are the best of the best This just isnt me alot of people would agree with this list.

and then there's me...

Great job, you're a natural!

preciate i hawk..i was excited and nervous at the same time

So... When can we replace Dewey with Ovie?

Where Dewey at?

yeah i second Dewey out for Ovie.

hey u guys give dewey a break. he saved my butt a couple of times bc i had no idea who some of the people were that i was interviewing till he filled me in

Nice job, Ovie.

What was with Lindsey Berg of the Olympic Volleyball team? Couldn't she at least act like she didn't mind being interviewed - maybe even excited that someone actually cares about volleyball? She said she was excited to see "everyone and anyone" and to mingle with all the athletes - yet she wanted nothing to do with Ovie.

thats what im saying she showed me no love on the red carpet but they were all alot more talkative inside w out the cameras. she said she was camera shy, but i think i might be too short for her

Ouch, Dewey, you better watch out!

Ovie, fantastic job. I sense a career waiting for you on Entertainment Tonight after you retire from the NFL.

Awesome job. Love the suit. Very clean.

i was hesitant to do the linen sut at first but i was glad i did later on bc it was soooooo dang hott

How did you keep it from getting completely wrinkled?
I have a pair of linen pants that look so cute for the 1st 5 minutes I wear them. You can basically forget about sitting down.

Sweet! Ovie, you killed it.

rock on Ovie..... just wondering do you star athletes ever find yourself starstruck by other athletes or some of the stars in attendance?

oh most definitely but u gotta play it off like its no big deal. i met samuel jackson in the green room and was trying so hard to match his coolness but i couldnt do it so i jus waved like a dork and kept on walkn

that rocks... he is the man. Wonder if he gets starstruck....?
you defly got some good interviews for us thanks very much.... love your blogging too, keep rockin on.

Got a few more pictures for you guys...

Who is the other broad with Kendra?

she is another playmate at the playboy mansion. its crazy but playboy playmates look like reg people with their clothes on....go figure :-)

Isn't she the Victoria secret model?

No way does either of those girls look "regular" at all...lol.

How many time do you think Merriman's hooked up with Kendra?

im not touching that one. why cant they just be 2 good friends

I think there is a line of women waiting to hook up w/Merriman.

Ovie, good work, nice to see you out of your comfort zone that is what it is all about. Good luck in traning camp, stay healthy

Ovie, you got some awesome personality. I am gonna pay a little bit of extra attention to the Falcons this year! Well done.

yeah Ovie is defly a great player and personality.... very niiiice

Ovie, awesome job! It was great working with you on the red carpet, can't wait to do it again.
- Jeff

thx alot jeff it was great working with yall too. im actually in the training room of training camp using one of the interns computers but i had a great time at the espys and im def rdy to get to work

Absolutely no offense meant to Ovie, but I think the ESPY's are stupid, top to bottom. First off, it's hyped as the 'Academy Awards' of the sporting world, yet it's TAPED AND SHOWN AT A LATER DATE, and then you can't get away from it for the next two weeks as it's repeated ad nauseum on both ESPN & ESPN2 at least once a day, sometimes twice. Note to ESPN: if you can't fill your broadcast timeslots, then hire someone who can, but stop with all the repeats of shows that should only be shown once, and live at that.

As for you, Ovie? It appears as though you had a really good time and I couldn't be happier for you. You did a very good job of interviewing people and I'm sure that either ESPN, or Fox Sports will take notice and hire you after you retire from the game of football.

Thank you for your time...

Cheers!!!

whats up burn, i preciate u being real w me, but i am positive that if u actully got to go to the espys your views of it would be different. but i still apreciate the props
