An Oakland Raiders cornerback claims he was penalized on Sunday for making a religious display while celebrating an interception. After picking off a Matt Schaub(notes) pass in the end zone, Oakland Raiders cornerback Chris Johnson celebrated by dropping to his knees and raising his arms in triumph. He was instantly flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for excessive celebration.Johnson later complained that he was whistled for thanking God:"I'm just getting on my knees givi...

Better he should have engaged in some stupid dance, leapt into the stands, saluted Al Davis, shook the ref`s hand, or simply munched on a Snickers. The owners are running their own game into the ground and it may not be long before some of them will be on their knees before heaven. You go Chris, you know who the REAL MAN is.

Does anyone remember that video were someone (Goodell? Tagliabue?) said that the only acceptable touchdown celebration was thanking God?

The VP of Officiating said it, but the officials on the field, well, let`s not be too critical of some old dudes who can`t remember what their boss stated. Senility and booze do play tricks on the mind. Maybe they`ll remember the next time one of them prays? Good find, Alana.

Next thing you know, some fools will try to get the national anthem barred at games because it offends some other ethnic group. Where is it going to end? This country was founded and thrived on religious principles until a few years ago. Now, we can see where it's headed, can't we?

But that's not the issue -- the NFL said "praising the lord" was actually ok (watch that video). Chris Johnson's beef should be that the rule was unfairly applied to him -- he should have been allowed to kneel like he did. The refs are just against the Raiders, not religion!

Maybe the refs simply don`t like the west coast? We KNOW the officiating at `our` SuperBowl with Pittsburgh stunk, as it did for the Hawks in a crucial game with the Jets several years ago. I used to joke that the zebras were MAC owners who stuck it to the former co-partner at Microsoft (Paul Allen) every chance they got.

The more you try and regulate the officials , the worse the officiating gets. Kind of like our Cowboys.

to be fair, the ref was applying the rule. how is the ref supposed to know what's going on in the player's head when he's supposedly
'praying' (which i doubt). it's nice to take a little break from the raiders 1-3 record to take a few easy potshots at the refs though.
