Braydon Coburn returns to practice

Braydon Coburn returned to practice today for the Flyers in hopes of taking the ice for Game 4 tomorrow night. Coburn missed Game 3 because his eye was swollen shut following the puck to the face he took in Game 2. Coburn will wear a visor to protect his eye, which, as you can see above, looks better but still has a ways to go to fully open back up.

While it would be a great story and a true test of toughness if Coburn returns for Game 4, there is really no point in rushing him back to the ice. With the Flyers on the brink of elimination, if his vision is impaired in any way and there is any chance he could hurt himself worse, he should sit out. Even if he plays well and the Flyers win the game, they have a huge uphill battle ahead of them if they are going to win the series. It is likely there is a greater chance of Braydon Coburn getting injured worse than the Flyers have of winning four straight against the Penguins.

I'm impressed that he is just wearing the visor. If i just had 50 stitches around my eye i'm going full cage like Robidas is doing in dallas after he broke his nose.

I'm definitely surprised he's not going with the college style full cage:

He's tough. He's a hockey player.

yeah he's tough no question about it but after taking a puck to your eye and being forced out of a couple of games you would think that he would want to play it safe.

Why do something that would make him feel uncomfortable and might impact his place on the ice? Safety is great and all...but it means little to some in battle.

Besides...he's wearin a half shield in the pic...that should protect the wound

A stick could easily come under the visor and hit him in the eye.

And guess what...he'll start bleeding...4 min power play. If he could help his team out that much I think he'd be all for it.

Yeah, I am sure he won't mind losing his eye for the team.....

You must be a mother with logic like that. Nothing has changed since being hit with a puck that would have him risk losing an eye..thats just taking it a little far. Its a cut, a very big cut/gash, but his longterm vision and actual eyeball are not in danger. Freak accidents and injuries can happen at any time, I suppose every player should wear protective collars as well to protect from getting their throats slashed too.

There you go making things personal again. You really need to relax..... say your opinions without calling people names! He still has lingering affects from an eye injury, meaning there is an increased chance another injury there could cause more permanent injuries. I have no doubts that he is tough and will likely be ready to play tomorrow.

You sound like a mother...plain and simple. Perhaps you shouldn't take things so personally. The only lingering effect, not affect, is some swelling. He has the same chances for further injury with or witout the swelling.

Because I have concerns over the health of a player I am a mother? OK? What about all the talk about Coburn possibly suffering from concussion-like symptoms? Those sound like lingering affects to me!

A concussion is a completely different ballgame than a laceration now isn't it. You were the one who made a comment about he could lose an eye. One famous saying that almost every mother has made is "be careful or somebody might lose an eye!" So in that instance you sounded like a Mother...need any further explanation? I could draw a picture for you if you would like.

Draw it. Let's see it.

I'll have my niece work on one for ya...you're closer to her level.

Can't wait to see it!

Enrique, just wondering if you have ever put on some skates and stepped onto an ice rink, let alone actually play hockey? Hockey players a different breed of athletes. They get teeth knocked out and continue to play, would you say that is compromising their long term dental health and they shouldnt play? I had my jaw dislocated from a 2 handed baseball swing, popped my jaw back in and didnt miss a shift! I mean come on, hockey players are the only professional athletes that i could actually call warrior and not get mad about man. A cut over the eye, no matter how bad it looks, isnt as serious as a concussion. If he has "concussion like syndromes" then he's gonna know and the training staff isnt going to let him play anyway after dealing with lindros and gagne. so please just stop the whining about his safety, if he's good to go, hes good to go.

I don't think you really understand my point. I know that hockey players are another breed and I have no doubts that Coburn will try to play on Sunday. The Flyers were worried today that he might have had a concussion. They said it, not me.
