Is Olympian Dara Torres doping?

I love to believe in great stories, comeback stories, and underdogs taking down the favorites. However, since the past decade has been marred by scandal after scandal, it has become increasingly difficult to believe some feats that have been accomplished. Insert into this category the shocking feats of 41 year old swimmer Dara Torres in the Olympic trials. She is smoking the competition and setting world records...AT THE AGE OF 41! Not only is she beating swimmers half her age, she's had a child, multiple shoulder and knee surgeries, and oh, did I mention she's 41! So that brings up the inevitable questions: is she doping? Is she on something that the Olympic Committee can't even test for yet? She has made herself open to any and all tests that the US Anti-Doping Agency wants to conduct so I guess she's pretty confident she won't get caught of perhaps, just maybe, she is actually clean and this is a story for the record books. Your thoughts?

It sucks that we have to start asking this question after every great accomplishment in sports. I'm not convinced that she's clean though, I mean, c'mon, there are too many things working against her.

It's an honest question, I think it would be difficult for anybody to blindly accept what she's accomplished during these trials.

In the USA we believe in the concept of "innocent until proven guilty." Torres has said test me any way you want. I say test her, but do not say she is dirty until you have some shred of evidence say she is.
Also if you are going to make this argument, don't over state the facts. She has not set any world records recently. The last world record she set was on July 21, 1984 in the 50m free. She has never owned the 100m free record.

It makes me sad to read this post. Still, I completely understand that the current climate in sports is forcing the question. However, not only does Dara have a long, long track record of success (Gee, like her last 4 trips to the Olympics), but for those who know swimming, it is not unusual for swimmers to swim faster and faster with age.

What makes Dara so special is that long after other swimmers/athletes have retired (permanently) she put in the time, dedication and raw hard work to prepare herself for competition on the world's biggest sporting stage. She is an inspiration and a representation of a shifting paradigm. Older does not have to mean slower.

I have to wonder if we are really talking more about pictures of Dara, ripped and lean, as opposed to her actual swim performance.

Here is a secret...if you train at the highest levels, are extremely dedicated to your nutrition, your body work and training, (and have some good genetics) you might possibly look like Dara does. I think most people aren't really familiar with top athletic bodies in endurance sports. I'll be cheering for Dara and have 100% confidence that she is clean.

Her boyfriend, father of her daughter, is an endocrinologist.
For you that don't know and endocrinologist deals with the endocrine system which surprise secretes hormones.
Hormones are the primary source of performance enhancement drugs.
Many doping athletes used the services of an endocrinologist because they are experts at masking.
Secondly she uses a bronchial dilator for her asthma. Interesting a bronchial dilator allows for increased oxygen intake.
