Without a legitimate SS for most of the year, with neither Penny nor Smoltz working out, the David Ortiz difficulties for the first 49 games of the season and the shutting down of Matsuzaka for the better part of the year, it’s amazing the Sox were still Wild Card winners. Francona has continually found a way to keep his players loose, focused and hungry throughout a 162 game season.

Big Papi Needs to Sit for Game 3
David Ortiz is in a slump again; he is having a hard time catching up to fastballs and Angels pitchers are giving him a steady diet of them. He is now 0-8 in the ALDS with 4 strikeouts and has not even hit the ball hard on and of his outs. Big Papi has a career average of .205 against Angels Game 3 starter Scott Kazimir so don't expect a big turnaround at Fenway.
