As the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine unfolds, I’ll be passing along the rankings of the players that worked out as they relate to Patriots’ needs. Yesterday I brought you the top performers among the runningbacks and any Patriots-related news regarding the position. Saturday, I brought you the top performers among the offensive linemen. Today, the defensive linemen and linebackers ran through the various drills and positional workouts. Defensive end is my #3 need for the Pats, so today’s focus will be on the defensive linemen group as a whole. Tomorrow morning I’ll post the top performers for the linebacker group, which is my #1 Patriots need from a pass-rushing standpoint. 40-Yard Dash

  1. Dontay Moch, Nevada – 4.44 sec (That’s an AMAZING time for a defensive lineman!)
  2. Chris Carter, Fresno State – 4.62 sec
  3. Sam Acho, Texas, and Brooks Reed, Arizona – 4.68 sec
  4. Jabaal Sheard, Pittsburgh – 4.69 sec
  5. Robert Quinn, North Carolina – 4.70 sec

Bench Press

  1. Stephen Paea, Oregon State – 49 reps (49 reps!!!! That’s a new Scouting Combine record!)
  2. Marvin Austin, North Carolina – 38 reps
  3. Bruce Miller, Central Florida – 354 reps
  4. Adrian Taylor, Oklahoma, and J.J. Watt, Wisconsin – 34 reps
  5. Ryan Kerrigan, Purdue , Drake Nevis, LSU, Phil Taylor, Baylor, and Ian Williams, Notre Dame – 31 reps

Vertical Jump

  1. Dontay Moch, Nevada – 42.0″ (This ties the recent best among defensive linemen, which was set in 2006 by Mark Anderson, Alabama)
