Here at Turn On The Jets, we decided to take a page out of Robert Mays book over at Grantland (a polite way of saying rip his article idea off) by counting down the 115 days until the New York Jets kick off, with a daily reason to get excited about their return. Mays has the whole NFL to work with, we only have the Goddamn Jets…now there is a challenge, step your game up Mays! We continue today with a look at the old and wise Antonio Cromartie (NOTE you can see entire series right here) When the New York Jets traded for Antonio Cromartie before the 2010 season, it was considered a “risky” move. Cromartie’s play had gradually declined in San Diego and he had a reputation as an immature player and individual. Whether that perception was fair or not, Cromartie has slowly built himself into a leader of the Jets defense, one of the team’s elite players and a respected voice in the locker room. On the field, Cromartie was one of the league’s best corners last season. For the second year in a row, he will be asked to play the “Darrelle Revis Island” role on the Jets defense, manning up the opposing team’s best receiver on a weekly basis. Last year he was up to the challenge. This year he gets to face Vincent Jackson, Mike Wallace twice, Steve Smith, Julio Jones, Marques Colston, AJ Green and Torrey Smith among others. The defense will be highly reliant on his shutdown abilities. Off the field, Cromartie hosted a defensive backs camp this summer, has made a point to give advice about properly handling money off the field and has stayed out of trouble since the day he put on the Green and White. Any questions about Cromartie’s maturity at this point are misplaced and likely built around trying to make a joke from Hard Knocks three years ago. The Jets have missed on their share of trades and transactions but the Cromartie trade was a wise move, as they have been lucky to get a quality player on the field and a quality individual off it. - NEW YORK DAILY NEWS STORY PITCH OF THE DAY – 2,400 word collaboration from Manish Mehta and Gary Myers previewing New York Jets training camp. The article will be divided up into four sections: How To Replace Tebow, Rex Tattoo Watch, Sanchez Headband Count, and finally Anonymous Quotes From People Loosely Affiliated With Somebody Who Knows Somebody That Was Once On The Jets.  RANDOM JET OF THE DAY – JERALD SOWELL! The SOWELL TRAIN! A personal favorite of TOJ. Sowell played 9 seasons for the Jets as a running back and then eventually as a fullback. Between the 2003 and 2004 seasons, he had 92 receptions (!) for 778 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sowell was a good lead blocker and a quality all-around offensive weapon. Let’s hope this year’s 7th round pick Tommy Bohanon turns into Sowell 2.0
