Here at Turn On The Jets, we decided to take a page out of Robert Mays book over at Grantland (a polite way of saying rip his article idea off) by counting down the 115 days until the New York Jets kick off, with a daily reason to get excited about their return. Mays has the whole NFL to work with, we only have the Goddamn Jets…now there is a challenge, step your game up Mays! We continue today with a look at the Jets keeping a Landry in their defensive backfield (Note, you can track this entire series right here) Not surprisingly, New York Jets fans took a strong liking to safety LaRon Landry in 2012. He brought a physical style of play and unique athleticism to the safety position. However, new GM John Idzik made the right choice in letting him walk in free agency. The Indianapolis Colts gave him 4 years and 24 million dollars with a borderline asinine 14 million guaranteed. Giving that much guaranteed money to a player with LaRon’s injury history and limitations in pass coverage was never a reasonable option for the Jets. Fortunately they were able to soften the blow of losing LaRon by signing his brother, Dawan. Similar to his brother, he is a physical in the box safety who struggles in pass coverage. He lacks LaRon’s level of talent but is a savvy veteran who knows Rex Ryan’s defense well. The Jets desperately need his leadership at the safety position, with second year players Josh Bush and Antonio Allen battling it out for the starting job along with undrafted free agent Rontez Miles. Landry isn’t going to fill the highlight reel with flashy plays but he will provide consistency and avoid making critical mistakes on a weekly basis. - NEW YORK DAILY NEWS STORY PITCH OF THE DAY - 600 words on Geno Smith leaving a 19% tip at a local Applebees. A busboy close to the situation, who wished to remain nameless noted surprise at not seeing his waiter buddy get a full 20% “even though the shrimp seemed a little undercooked and his table didn’t have any ketchup on it.” If he isn’t going to tip well, even on bad service, how he will handle a tough day on the field, even though he has bad wide receivers? RANDOM JET OF THE DAY – DEREK PAGEL! - #25 in the below picture. A 5th round pick from Iowa who played 2 seasons in the NFL, logging 19 career tackles. THAT’S OUR BRADWAY!
