Well, here we go again.
Like last year, the Caps slow start to a playoff series has them down 3-1 to a team they are better than. Not much better, but better.
For the 1,000,000th time, the Caps are likely going to be done in by a red hot goalie who has played out of his mind. Can the Caps ever be the team that has that goalie? I'll give you 1998 where Olie had some amazing games, but once the Caps can be the team with that great goalie, then we will finally take a drink from the Stanley Cup.
Simeon Varlamov can be that guy, but give him a break. He's only 20 years old. He's been very good, but he's needed to be perfect and that's just too much to ask.
The Caps have played 4 pretty good games. They would have crushed the Canadiens. They would likely have a lead over the Flyers and maybe even the Canes or Devils. But for some reason they just aren't getting the puck past Henrik Lundqvist.
Part of it is him being great, and the rest is just not finishing the opportunities. Man, there were a lot of opportunities in Game 4. The Caps rang two shots off the post. They had great shots that ended up just wide or right in the glove of Lundqvist. The chances were there. The Rangers got lucky a couple of times and put it in the net. When you dig yourselves a hole like the Caps did, they can't afford to get unlucky. The margin for error is so small. Now there is no more margin for error.
The Capitals are going to need to win 3 straight games against a netminder that is in their heads. Not an easy task. Yet, they have the experience from last year that saw them get awfully close to doing just that.
First things first and that's Friday night. It's gotta all be laid on the line. No more excuses. Eric Fehr, Tomas Fleischmann, Viktor Kozlov, and Sergei Fedorov... help us out guys!! Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin, and Nick Backstrom cannot do it all by themselves. Mike Green, where have you been???
This is it. I know we are still a very very young team, a team that will make a big run in the near future. They are good and should remain good. It's tough to be patient now as they learn the ropes, and going out in the first round will likely be deemed a step backward. Yet, if this is what it takes for these young 20-somethings to figure out what the playoffs is all about and how you must overcome the 'hot goalie' and battle in a way that you never see in the regular season, then so be it.
I have faith this team can win 3 games in a row. I hope they can. Regardless of what all the experts are going to say about Lundqvist. He's just a man. Play your game and take it to them... one game at a time.... and just see what happens. It's desperation time.

Big Game...
I know you know this, and I don't mean to state the obvious, but this game tonight is huge.Regardless of tonight's outcome, I think the Rangers will lose Game 5 Friday night. If the Rangers win, they take a 3-1 lead in the series and can afford to lose a game in Washington, knowing that the series comes back to the Garden for Game 6, where they can put it away.If they lose...
Fancy Plays, Losing Ways
There's little doubt which team had the momentum going into tonight's tilt in Madison Square Garden. The Washington Capitals, clearly the more skilled team, finally played postseason hockey Monday night. Their performance against the Rangers was so dominant that the common refrain was that the Caps had "woken up" and were, despite being down a game, back on track to take the series...
When Empires Collide
Is this series now a saga of when empires collide, because the Caps now have "the Czar" (Simeon Varlamov) versus "the King" (Lundqvist)? The good guys will need a white knight, or at least a few foot soldiers to smite the Czar, the Cossack, and other assorted Huns.Did Stan 'The Maven' Fischler's trash talking after the game one win make it on to the Caps Bulletin Board?Bragging is not The Maven's
Rangers look for fourth straight against Calgary
The Rangers will be making their first trip into Calgary tonight in nearly five years to take on the Flames at 9 pm on MSG2. The Flames are an explosive team who are led by Mike Keenan, winner of the 1994 Stanley Cup with the Rangers.Henrik Lundqvist will be back in the net against Jarome Iginla and ...
Already Very Young Simeon Varlamov Has WashingtonHockey All ATwitter
Maybe, just maybe, Caps' 20-year-old netminding sensation Simeon Varlamov will John Druce-ify us this postseason. Maybe he will make like Ken Dryden or Cam Ward and backstop the Caps all the way to Glory. But no matter what else he does this spring, Simeon Varlamov has made this hockey season special. He has electrified Washington's hockey fans in the present and fostered...
Saw That Coming...
People were getting mad at me for telling them the Rangers would be crushed today, and lo and behold, they were. I hope I'm right in saying that they would also win at MSG on Sunday. And I'm glad that if Henrik Lundqvist was going to have a night off, this was it, in a game the Rangers could afford to lose so long as they remember to show up for Game 6.What I didn't see...
1 Down, 2 To Go
I'm frustrated.
What a great performance the Caps had on Friday night in a must-win Game 5. But I'm frustrated because I wonder where this type of effort was in the first 2 games of this series. I just don't get how this team does not seem to put it all on the line until they are one loss from elimination.
They put themselves in a very tough situation where one...
The definition of insanity...
... is being a Caps fan since 1974 and still hanging around waiting for a Cup (no, I didn't expect one this year). The last and only time the Caps reached the Eastern Conference Finals was the last time the Caps won a playoff series. In 1998. 11 long years ago. Wayne Gretsky still played hockey for the New York Rangers (sigh) and got 90 points. There probably isn'...
