One of the great things of the Indians official twitter account is when Swain and or Sibel post links to Mark Shapiro press conference audio. Or you could just watch a video the plain dealer put up.
Shapiro tackled some questions, but wanted to focus towards next season and not the past.
He fielded a lot of questions about the manager. He mentioned how, when it came down to it, he wanted a leader.
Now the latest concerning the managerial search. Shapiro has narrowed his list to eight to ten candidates. Now as far as official candidates?
Manny Acta?
That's the only name that has been floated around. We know they like Torey Lovullo as well.
I'm in the process of getting the offseason chart back up and that will include the search for a manager.
I've put up a list of my top ten candidates the Indians SHOULD go after on Bleacher Report in a slide-show. Go ahead and read it here.
Valentine tops my list. I tweeted about the Olney story and how he just commands respect and has knowledge. I sort of fell in fell in love with that idea.
It's not happening though... It's just not happening. I don't think it will...
And if John Farrell is serious about this no interest thing..
I don't want Manny Acta!
Well it's not a sexy name that's the thing. If Acta were the guy Shapiro would hire, then.. I guess we go with it. The Nationals are the Nationals, so who knows just how good he really is. But do we want to take a chance with what they've given up on?
In the end, I trust Shapiro to do his due-diligence here.. I'm sort of more excited to see what sort of staff surrounds the new manager.
And one thought I had was hiring a guy like a Ned Yost...
Not exactly Ned Yost, that would be my brightest suggestion at least.
But a Ned Yost type, someone with experience.. And let Torey Lovullo be on staff, in some capacity. To learn, to be on the job, to get the major league experience that the Indians want to hire to be their current manager.
And if things don't go right with the guy we hire.. Lovullo is there, gaining experience.
Either way, I want to hire someone that's going to work out.. But I'd love for them to elevate Lovullo to the next level. It just makes too much sense to get him up here and have him learn.
How about coaches though? What's on your wish list?
One thing that Shapiro talks about was identifying major leaguers that are getting close to their career being over as being minor league managers.
Sal Fasano is someone that comes to mind. Of course.
But that was just a side note..
Coaches.. Sure it depends on the manager they hire, but we are getting a fresh-new staff from my guesses. I don't know if Shapiro and Company will push for the new guy to bring on any of their old coaches, I would at least hope he would for Rivera, but who knows.
Anyway the deadline remains the end of the World Series.
My list of candidates is one that I just assembled from reading and stuff.. Where some of these guys like Hoynes are getting names is beyond me. I don't know why Mike Hargrove's name keeps coming up.
So far the Indians haven't contacted any team or any candidate yet. But you can bet they will soon. They're really doing their homework with a list of 30 original candidates that have now been narrowed down.
Another thing to note, Shapiro doesn't expect finances to be an issue. So go hog wild here.
It's getting interesting.. We'll leave it at that.. Hopefully we start getting some names to add to the list rather soon. To recap so you don't have to click links, here are the top ten candidates the Indians should consider.
Bobby Valentine, John Farrell, Ron Roenicke, Torey Lovullo, Dave Clark, Brad Mills, Jose Oquendo, Fredi Gonzalez, Terry Pendleton, Ned Yost.
And here is my top five.
1. Bobby Valentine
2. Fredi Gonzalez/John Farrell
3. Ron Roenicke
4. Ned Yost
5. Torey Lovullo
Take in mind it appears Fredi Gonzalez is staying, but when I wrote this list up, Gonzalez status was in doubt. But that still doesn't mean the Marlins couldn't make a silly decision and do otherwise.
Gonzalez and Farrell might be off-limits, but it doesn't hurt to hope and wish, considering it's just that, a wish list.
I really like Ron Roenicke. For those who don't know who he exactly is. He's the bench coach for the Angels and he's been with them for just about the entire decade. He's the one that took over for Joe Maddon when he left for Tampa. Why wouldn't you want a Mike Scioscia disciple?
I've already went over my Ned Yost-or someone like him plan.
And Bobby Valentine of course.
If all else fails, Lovullo wouldn't be the worst fall-back candidate. But I'm sure that's the thinking that got them Eric Wedge.
If all of this fails though... We could assemble a list, like this one. I personally would support Captain Lou Albano, as long as he brought George Steele with him to charge the mound and bite the pitchers face off.
