According to MLBTR, the Cubs are one of several teams that are interested in the 21-year old Aroldis Chapman.  MLBTR has learned that the Cubs and White Sox have expressed interest in free agenty lefty Aroldis Chapman.  The Cardinals have been more aggressive than those clubs, and plan to meet with Chapman next week. The Chapman tour began yesterday in New York, as the 21-year-old’s agency decided not to make MLB clubs come to Andorra.  ESPN’s Jorge Arangure Jr. believes Chapman will command a contract in the $40-60MM range. Chapman is a lefty who has hit 102 mph before.  Offers will probably start somewhere around half of what the agent is expecting to get.  Going after Chapman makes sense in several ways.  First of all, he’s got a ton of potential and could be a top of the rotation pitcher quickly.  The Cubs are likely not going to be able to spend much money so a risk like this for 6 years of club control would benefit the Cubs if he’s as good as the Cubs and other teams think he is.  It also makes sense because it just makes sense to sign the best available international free agents when you have a chance.  I highly doubt the Cubs get a deal done with him.  There are several other interested teams including the Yankees, Mets and Red Sox.  It’s likely that one of the teams, Cardinals and White Sox included, will offer more than the Cubs will.
