> For 17 innings, the Phillies had played nearly mistake-free baseball (the exception: Rollins' ninth inning error last night), refusing to cede to the pressure that took out the Twins and Angels. Down two in the eighth and facing Mariano Rivera in his bid for a six-out save, Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino did exactly what you'd want them to do there; made the pitcher throw a lot of pitches and get on base. Chase Utley then battled to a full count, and drama was brewing. And then the runners inexplicably didn't go as Utley got sawed off on a dribller to second, and just as fast as you can say Missed Opportunity, that was a double play to get Mariano Rivera off the hook. (Ed. Note: Charlie Manuel specifically didn't send the runners, citing Utley's contact tendencies and his desire to see Howard hit in that inning. Um, OK. So put the brainlock on the manager instead.)You can't overstate the magnitude of that play, really. Had Victorino gotten to second, y...

Yankee Fans Do Not Impress Jimmy Rollins
After last night’s 3-1 loss to the Yankees which evened the series at one game apiece, Jimmy Rollins was asked what he thought of the supposed hostile crowd at Yankee Stadium (ya know, if they stick around for the whole thing) and you can judge for yourself, but it doesn’t sound like he was too [...]
Sabathia, Yanks ready to muzzle Rollins, Phils

Cuts on Rivera, Manuel and A-Rod's swing
Game 2 will not go into the Charlie Manuel highlight reel, writes Tom Verducci. At least the Phillies made Mariano Rivera work, which could pay dividends when the Series shifts to Philly.

Not only did Lee slay the beast...
… he did it with the greatest of ease. His bid for a World Series complete game shut-out was dashed when Jimmy Rollins’ throwing error in the bottom of the 9th allowed the lonesome Yankee run.
Not only did he toss a complete game masterpiece, he also had two web gems, taboot.
Yankees.com: Behind Burnett, Yanks even World Series
A sixth-inning homer by Hideki Matsui Thursday turned a duel in the Yanks’ favor, sparking a 3-1 win over the Phillies that tied the Fall Classic and ended with six outs by Mariano Rivera.
As one of the few bloggers who didn’t ridicule the A.J. Burnett signing, I feel vindication for one night. For all the crap I see about him being a ‘head case&...
Pedro Under the Weather? Selfish?
It was a long drive back from the Bronx this morning. I rotated the radio dial between 660 and 610 to try and piece together parts of the evening I may have missed. From my vantage point it looked as if A.J. Burnett simply bested the Phillies on the evening. Much like Cliff Lee dominated the Yankees in game one, Burnett stymied the Phillies batters. Props to him. There was a lot of...

Umps' blown calls a problem easily solved
PHILADELPHIA -- The first two games of the World Series have been, refreshingly, about the players. We've seen the artistry of Cliff Lee and A.J. Burnett, the power of Chase Utley and Mark Teixeira, the grace under fire of Mariano Rivera. We haven't seen, for the most part, the fumbling by managers and stumbling by umpires that have been running themes this October.
