In 2006, when he was a rookie, Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears asserted himself as a dynamic return specialist, with five touchdowns.
Through half this season, Percy Harvin is having a similar effect -- and coach Brad Childress indicated he may return some punts, too.
Hester was solid as a kickoff returner, averaging 26.4 yards, including two touchdowns. But his touchdowns were the only ones over 40 yards. Hester was actually far more dangerous as a punt returner, averaging 12.8 yards per punt and returning four over 40 yards -- including three touchdowns -- and 11 over 20 yards.
Can Harvin handle punts?
I would say absolutely.
Here's why. There are three requirements to being a good punt returner.
First, you have to be fearless. Returners usually have very little time to catch the ball, and they open themselves up to some big hits. And with smaller windows to run through, you are inevitably going to get hit.
