Ramirez: Mr. Cleanup

No trade acquisition is likely to be as important to the Cubs as Aramis Ramirez's return to form. ''You have to ask the other guys,'' Ramirez said of the effect his presence has on the lineup. ''But anytime you lose your cleanup hitter, it's going to affect the lineup.'' His loss was noticeable each time the Cubs struggled to score. Their other big hitters slumped while manager Lou...

Reds and Cubs today in an afternoon affair in Chicago. Aaron Harang will be leading the charge for the good guys. Today is the first day of a ten-game winning streak that is going to get the Reds back in the race. Bet the ranch on it. Discuss the game here. T.GIF – Brad “Lucky” Lidge

Tuesday night, the Phillies and Cubs were tied at 1 in the top of the 9th, when Lidge took the mound. Things started out great, with Brad forcing Derrek Lee into a 1-3 groundout. Then things started to take a Lidge-like turn when he plunked the very next batter he faced, putting Aramis Ramirez on first [...]

A First for Harang

Aaron Harang hit a three run homer in the second inning against the Cubs to give the Reds a 3-1 lead at the time. Chicago came back and tied the game at three, and that’s where the teams stand as they play in the bottom of the fourth. For Aaron, it was the [...]

Cubs vs Harang - Three things to Watch

For a while, I considered Aaron Harang to be be a very good pitcher. Now, I realize he's just good. I'm hoping the Cubs will beat up on him today, and here's what I'll be looking for...More grounders, or else: Harang threw about eight sinkers last time out, and it's a pitch he usually uses sparingly (if at all). Against his fastballs, Harang yielded a ground ball rate of 41% in the...

Red-hot righty Randy Wells looks for a sixth win in seven starts today when the Chicago Cubs host the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of a three-game National League Central series at Wrigley Field.

Alex Gonzalez Returns!

Alex Gonzalez has been activated and will start at shortstop this afternoon when the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs begin their weekend series. Gonzalez has been on the disabled list since June 20 because of bone chips in his right elbow. He had surgery to remove the fragments and is evidently ready to go. Today's game is scheduled for 2:20 PM Eastern time at Wrigley Field...

Cincinnati Reds' Starting Pitchers: First Inning Blues

As far as numbers go, 404 looks pretty cool.  Take away the parts that jut out of the fours and it would be 101-or binary for five, and five is a great number.  One can do all kinds of things with five. Unfortunately, 404 can also be looked at as a percentage.  So far this season, Reds' pitchers have given up at least one run during the first inning of 38 of their 94 gamesâ€...
