I don't expect anything to really come out of this, but with the baseball general managers meeting now in Chicago the rumors are once again stirring about the Phillies being a possible team in the front-running for Toronto Blue Jays ace pitcher Roy Halladay.

If you recall the Blue Jays were shopping around their start pitcher during the season and the Phillies were long considered the best bet to make a deal for him. But Toronto had too high of an asking price, turning down a similar deal with the addition of JA Happ that ended up going to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for Cliff Lee, a move that clearly went as a pleasant and rewarding one for a "second choice".

Now Jim Salisbury of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that although Ruben Amaro has announced his pecking order for the off-season as being "Third base, bullpen, bench," there is no reason to believe they would not improve their starting pitching if the right move could be made.

The Phils' attempt to build a better bullpen this winter apparently won't stop them from trying to strengthen their starting rotation.
More than one baseball official with knowledge of the Phillies' off-season plan said today that the team remains very much in the picture to acquire Toronto Blue Jays righthander Roy Halladay.
- Jim Salisbury, The Philadelphia Inquirer, 11/9/2009

Salisbury goes on to say that Phillies pitching prospect Kyle Drabek, as he was this summer, is still untouchable. Halladay does want to win now and the Phillies, who have been to two World Series' the past two seasons, seem like one of the most attractive clubs to give him a chance at that. And to be honest another top starting pitcher would certainly not hurt this team.

But acquiring Halladay will be costly, both in prospects given up and in salary. The pitcher is due $15.75 million in 2010, but the Phillies are in a position where salaries almost are a second thought for top players. With the Phillies in what could be the best era of the franchise there is no reason to hold anything back for a chance to win again.

As Salisbury says though there could likely be a large number of teams involved in the Halladay Sweepstakes this off-season, but expect the Phillies to remain one of the most popular names in the mix. It is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Here We Go Again: The Phillies Are Pursuing Halladay

You knew it was only a matter of time before this rumor started up again: according to Jim Salisbury of the Inquirer, the Phillies are interested in acquiring Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay. Yep, that's the same Roy Halladay the Phils pursued at the trade deadline last year before they balked at Toronto's high asking price and instead went with Cliff Lee at a discounted rate...

Yanks will inquire about Jays' Halladay

CHICAGO -- The world champion Yankees will inquire about superstar pitcher Roy Halladay, setting up a potential bidding competition that didn't exist last summer when now-deposed Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi made it clear he wanted to avoid trading Halladay within the division.

Pitching to be had beyond Halladay

Blyleven: Offseason talk is centering around the chase to acquire Roy Halladay. But as most teams can't afford the prospects and cash to trade for and keep the Jays' ace, they'll be looking elsewhere. Here are five pitchers to keep an eye on.

Jays Willing to Trade Halladay In Division

You just know that Roy Halladay and the Yankees will be a storyline this offseason. Many, including me, have speculated that Toronto would be adverse to dealing Doc in the AL East. Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald debunks that theory by quoting Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos as saying that it “won’t be a stumbling [...]

An Early Halladay Season in Philadelphia?

There's a report in this morning's Philadelphia Inquirer that the Phillies are going to pursue Roy Halladay. Halladay, you'll recall, was the most sought after prize at last year's trade deadline. The Phillies, though, opted to spend less, trading a prospect of good but less-valued prospects to the Indians for Cliff Lee. That deal worked out pretty well for them...

Buzz: Blue Jays Could Trade Halladay

In a report for MLB.com, Jordan Bastian says the Blue Jays might consider trading ace Roy Halladay. According to Bastian, new Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos said that the Blue Jays still want to keep Halladay but said: “…I think I have to be open-minded to anything that can make this ballclub better going forward and better [...]

Poll: Long-term deal to get Roy Halladay

Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star believes the Mets are among 10 teams that come close to matching up with the Blue Jays, in a deal for Roy Halladay …i wrote the following in early October, and i still feel the same… …much like with the Johan Santana situation with the Twins a [...]

Mike's 2010 Offseason Plan

Every offseason, since I've started blogging I've made a long post on what I think the Yanks should do this offseason with all my suggested moves conveniently stuck in one place. I try and keep it pretty realistic, no 400 million dollar payroll, no Roy Halladay trade prosposals, etc. So, here's my two cents on what the Yankees need to do going forward.1) Bring back Matsui...

Baseball Hot Stove Is Officially Turned On

You want to know how long the baseball season is? There are less than 100 days from the end of the regular season to the start of Spring Training. That's not a lot of time to cram in rest, relaxation and wheeling and dealing on the Hot Stove. With the GM meetings in Chicago this week leading up to the Baseball Winter Meetings in the tropical island location of Indianapolis (I believe...
