A scout has confirmed an ESPN.com report that the Phillies called the Red Sox about pitcher Brad Penny. Despite a 5-2 record, Penny owns a 5.85 ERA in 11 games with a 1.60 WHIP. The Red Sox have John Smoltz, Clay Buchholz, and Michael Bowden all performing well in Triple-A, meaning they will likely join the team soon.
Penny will be a free agent at seasons end and is making 5 million dollars in 2009. The Phillies are in serious need of pitching, but shouldn't part with a young pitching prospect for him. The Red Sox reportedly ask for shortstop Jason Donald, who is hitting .226 with 1 home run in Triple-A.

Atlanta is one of the teams in conversation with the Boston Red Sox about veteran right-hander Brad Penny, according to sources, at a time when the Red Sox have been doing their own research on Braves right fielder Jeff Francoeur.

Heyman On Strasburg, D'Backs, Penny

Jon Heyman of SI.com anticipates some memorable negotiations between the Nationals, Scott Boras and Stephen Strasburg. Here's what Heyman heard about Strasburg along with the rest of his rumors: Boras is still expected to demand $50MM for Strasburg. Think that's a lot? Some think Strasburg would command $100MM as a free agent.  Executives generally guess...

Braves Interested In Penny?

2:09pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman heard from a major league source who said the Braves have no interest in Penny. Bowman writes that "the Braves won't be among the teams showing interest in the big right-hander." 1:42pm: According to ESPN.com's Buster Olney the Braves are "in conversation with the Red Sox" about Brad Penny, who is pitching better as the...

A Penny for Phillies' Staff?

MLB.com's Todd Zolecki is reporting that the Phillies have been following Boston's Brad Penny, and have been told the price for Penny is Jason Donald.Donald has struggled early, but it is hard to believe the Phillies would make such a deal. If they see the guy who pitched 208 innings of 3.03 ERA baseball for the Dodgers in 2007, maybe. But Penny is at 6.04 ERA in 149 innings...

Tarnished Penny

I saw a rumor earlier today that the Red Sox might trade Brad Penny to the Braves for Jeff Francoeur. After Penny’s performance tonight, that might be an even deal. Brad gave up five runs to the Rangers in 5 2/3 innings, bring his ERA up to 5.85. The big blow, a [...]

Is Donald only worth a Penny

Todd Zolecki of MLB.com is reporting that the Phillies have been scouting Red Sox pitcher Brad Penny. The Red Sox supposedly asking for infield prospect Jason Donald. Brad Penny is not the power pitcher he used to be. He has averaged about 5.1 IP/9 this season for Boston. Donald has struggled in the minors this year and his value may decline if he continues sumping, but I would definitely...

Boston Red Sox News & Notes - 6/6

The Boston Red Sox kicked off a 7-day, 6-game homestand last night with a 5-1 loss to the AL West-leading Texas Rangers. Brad Penny started last night for the Red Sox and gave them four solid innings at the start. Then he came unglued in the 5th inning when the Rangers struck for four runs. We can [...]

Penny for Francoeur?

That's the rumor, anyway: The Braves already have made moves to augment their rotation, calling up super prospect Tommy Hanson to make his major league debut on Sunday, after summoning Kris Medlen last month. But Atlanta might not be done adding pitching. Atlanta is one of the teams in conversation with the Boston Red Sox about veteran right-hander Brad Penny, according to...

Please Odin no….

From Todd Zolecki’s MLB log: “A scout for one Major League team said the Phillies have been following Red Sox right-hander Brad Penny” Yucks. **** no! I have been one to opine on the Phillies signing players that might not have led to success, but even I’m not on board with this one. There is a simple [...]

No score so far in Boston

The rain is holding off at Fenway Park, and so are the bats. Brad Penny has tossed four scoreless innings, and Kevin Millwood has posted three zeroes as Boston comes to bat in the fourth. The Red Sox have three hits to one for the Rangers -- a bad-hop infield single by Jarrod Saltalamacchia. -- Jeff Wilson

Here's who the Rangers will use against Red Sox right-hander Brad Penny. It has rained at Fenway Park, and more is expected. The Rangers are taking batting practice right now under a light drizzle now. Rangers lineup Ian Kinsler, 2b Michael Young, 3b Hank Blalock, dh Nelson Cruz, rf David Murphy, lf Marlon Byrd, cf Chris Davis, 1b Jarrod Saltalamacchia, c Elvis Andrus...

Rangers add another

Chris Davis ripped a two-out run-scoring ground-rule double in the sixth that chased Red Sox starter Brad Penny and gave the Rangers a 5-0 lead. Kevin Millwood then pitched around a one-out single and a two-out double to perserve the five-run cushion. He has thrown 93 pitches, so definitely expect him back in the seventh. -- Jeff Wilson
