Pronger
The Flyers did not waste anytime getting Chris Pronger locked up to a new deal to solidify the trade. The Flyers did give up a lot but now they have a fantastic defenseman here for the rest of his career. Totally worth it. Just think about Pronger and Timonen on the power play and penalty kill. Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin beware! The deal is a seven year, for thirty five million dollars. Twenty nine million dollars of the deal will be paid out in the first four years. By going out the seven years, the Flyers get some cap relief with Pronger's hit just south of five million.Pronger will wear number 20 for the Flyers in tribute to his dad. Early chatter is Jon Stevens is thinking about pairing him with Timonen. I would pair Pronger with Ryan Parent who does well with veteran leadership, and put back together the pair of Timonen and Coburn. These are good problems to have!Congratulations to Shane Victorino who was voted in by the fans as the 33rd All Star! Philly fans can never be questioned on support. People voted like crazy for him. It's a well deserved honor. Victorino may end up starting since Carlos Beltran is hurt. Shane will join Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez, and Ryan Howard for the All-Star game on Tuesday. Ryan Howard has also accepted the invitation to participate in the homerun derby. The Phillies have rebounded nicely after a terrible couple weeks. They just took 3 of 4 from the Reds and the bats are heating up. Raul Ibanez should return this weekend against the Pirates. This is the final series before the All-star game. Hopefully the Phillies can take 2 of 3 in the series to finish strong before the break. Que the Roy Halladay watch......

Report: Niittymaki to Sign With Ray Emery's Former Russian Club

In an interesting twist of fate, it appears that free agent goalie Antero Niittymaki will head to the Russian KHL's Atlant Mytishchi, filling the spot vacated by Ray Emery, who was recently signed to be the Flyers' starter in '08-'09. Hopefully he'll have better luck with the team's staff than Emery did. Good luck to a good guy. We'll miss Nitty.

Antero Niittymaki signs with Lightning, will not go to Russia

Or not. Looks like Antero Niittymaki will be staying in the NHL after all. The former Flyers goaltender, who had reached a preliminary contract with a team in the KHL, changed his mind and instead signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning, presumably to back up Mike Smith. The Lightning now have a very solid 1-2 punch in net.Still nothing, not even a rumor, about where Martin Biron...

Hugs For A Legendary Thug : G’Bye To Claude Lemieux

“Today’s NHL is filled with polarizing players,” muses Puck Daddy’s Greg Wyshynski, “but perhaps only Chris Pronger comes closest to Claude Lemieux for the extreme swings between hockey hero and notorious thug in his career.”  Despite lifting the Stanley Cup with 3 different teams and scoring 80 playoff goals (9th most in league history), Lemieux [...]

Cap hits and players over the age of 35

After being asked by the esteemed James Mirtle about whether or not Chris Pronger counts as being 35 for the sake of his new contract and the cap implications that flow from that, I went and took a look at the specific provision of the CBA. It reads: All Player Salary and Bonuses earned in [...]

Emery/Pronger...Missing Pieces to Flyers' Puzzle?

He said it, just as every other player has said it coming to a new team. "I'm here to help this team win a Stanley Cup." Chris Pronger believes that he can help the Flyers do just this. In the last three years, the one thing that held the Flyers back from making the push was the lack of defense in front of their sub-par goaltenders. In one offseason, the Flyers have...
