Last week I recommended Garrett Atkins for a spot on our team, a possible upgrade over Fernando Tatis as the back-up corner infielder who might end up beating out Dan Murphy at 1B. Most of the people I spoke to about the idea either liked it or weren't against but were leery of his cost. That appears to be the same issue the Rockies are running into, apparently Atkins is to expensive going into arbitration at 7M and will probably end up non-tendered. Once a free agent I would still try to sign him at a bargain....Don't count on the Rockies making the same type of move with third baseman Garrett Atkins that the Royals did with Teahen. Atkins is simply too expensive to trade — he likely would receive a raise from $7.05 million in his final year of arbitration — and is virtually certain to be non-tendered. Apparently some people close to Matt Holliday are scoffing at the idea that he would come to NY. I think with any Boras client, the highest bidder will be where he ends up, which I d...

Matt Holliday – He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

The Mets would love to have Matt Holliday penciled into their Opening Day lineup next season, but the question is; Does Matt Holliday want to play for the Mets? According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, he has a source who has told him that Matt Holliday’s top two choices in free agency are the Yankees and the Mets, in that [...]

Will The Yanks Go After Bay Or Holliday?

With all the controversy surrounding weather to bring back Johnny Damon or Hideki Matsui, many fans have brought up the idea of signing outfielders Matt Holliday or Jason Bay. To me, when you win a championship, you shouldn't really try to change your team all that much, unless there's a guy like Mark Teixeira or CC Sabathia out there on the market, which this year, there...

Where Darren Oliver = Matt Holliday Happens

The official Elias free agent compensation rankings were released earlier today. For those unaware, these rankings essentially determine the draft compensation (if any) a player’s previous team will recover based on a few criteria. For one, the former team must offer the player arbitration or have the player sign before the arbitration offering deadline. From [...]

Trading for outfield help

This winter, if the Yankees choose to steer clear of expensive free agents such as Matt Holliday and Jason Bay, and, given the lack of fully developed talent in the organization’s farm system (Austin Jackson isn’t ready yet), how will Brian Cashman address a bereft left field in the Bronx? While there are cheaper candidates, [...]

And So the Posturing Begins...

As the Hot Stove begins to heat up the rumor mill will go into action and both sides will use the media to try to raise or lower player values.  Today we have news from two teams looking to bring down some prices which in turn could help the Red Sox.  First there is the Mets who say that Jason Bay and Matt Holliday will be too expensive for them.  The Yankees are also trying this...

Thin free-agent market may lead to trades

CHICAGO -- No team is going to spend or presumably improve via free agency like the Yankees did last winter, when they doled out $423.5 million to three star players alone. Post-parade, and as the GM meetings get underway here on Monday, the only conclusion that can be drawn is that the Yankees spent wisely. But with the Yankees far less needy this winter and this year's free...

Yankees can't resist free agents

Now that No. 27 is in the books, it's time for the Yankees to seek their 28th championship with the help of John Lackey and Matt Holliday, and when do Roy Halladay and Joe Mauer become free agents again? Reports out of New York, one from long-time New York...

O’Dowd named executive of year by The Sporting News

DENVER — In the final year of his contract, Dan O’Dowd enjoyed his finest year as the Rockies’ GM. He was recognized by The Sporting News today, named Executive of the Year by his peers. Coming off a disappointing 2008 season, O’Dowd began reshaping the team last winter. He traded all-star Matt Holliday for three players, [...]

Delgado, Tatis worth draft picks

The Elias Sports Bureau released its official free-agent rankings yesterday, and only two of eight eligible Mets -- Carlos Delgado and Fernando Tatis -- were declared worthy of draft-pick compensation. Delgado and Tatis were classified as Type B f...
