It's that time again, the last week of the season. It's a sad occasion for many fans, nearing the end of the road for their favorite team. For others, it's a time of nail-biting excitement and anticipation. Regardless of the outcome, this year's postseason is sure to be full of surprises.
The Atlanta Braves have nosed their way into the 2009 playoff picture, completing a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals with a 6-3, 10-inning win on Sunday, their sixth straight victory and 14th in 16 games.
Speaking of the Nats, man they suck. Sunday's loss guaranteed them an even worse season than last year's 59-102 record. Yikes.
The Minnesota Twins are another team scraping and clawing for a spot in the postseason. After winning 11 of their last 13 games, they're headed to Comerica Park for a vital four game series against the division rival Detroit Tigers, who lead them by 2 games in the American League Central.
The New York Yankees, heavily favored since the beginning of the season to go all the way, clinched the AL East Sunday after beating the Boston Red Sox 4-2. I'm sure they'll enjoy the home-field advantage.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are working on the NL West with their magic number suspended at one, while Manny Ramirez sits with a sore left hamstring. Ronnie Belliard will join him on the bench after injuring his groin running the bases Sunday, and is expected to be out for a couple of days. Meanwhile, Manny will be available for pinch-hit emergencies during the Dodgers' two-game series against the San Diego Padres beginning on Tuesday in LA.
