TEAMS: Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs
As much as I like Kerry Wood (one of my five favorite Cubs ever), does anybody want to revisit the argument that it made sense to spend $10 million a year on him as the team's closer?Kerry Wood: 8 saves, 4 blown saves, 5.47 ERA, 1.50 WHIPKevin Gregg: 11 saves, 2 blown saves, 3.66 ERA (June: 1.69), 1.38 WHIP (June: .75)As noted previously in a discussion here at WV23, the choice was simple: It was all opportunity cost. Do you spend a total of $5 million on the entire bullpen to achieve x or $12 million on the entire bullpen to achieve y? And is y greater than x - not to mention is y plus z (a new right fielder) greater than x?While Milton Bradley struggled early compared to other possible right field signings (though he's batting .311 with a .380 OBP in June), the answer - so far - is clearly "yes," even with right field taken out of the equation.Perhaps this is why you see so much focus on Mark DeRosa among the anti-Hendry cabal.

Woods blows save against his former team
Kerry Wood let go of the pitch, saw it land low and wide of his catcher and then walked off the mound in misery. Wood’s return to Wrigley Field had gone from bad to worse. After blowing a save in Friday’s 10-inning loss, Wood stumbled again Saturday against his former team.
Z Motown Meltdown ... Gregg Blows Another One - Cubs 4 Tigers 5
Game Sixty-Seven - Cubs 4 Tigers 5
WP - Brandon Lyon (3-3) LP - Kevin Gregg (2-2, BS 3) Save - None
Leading up to the bottom of the ninth, the Cubs had played one of their better road games of the season. The Cubs' offense struggled again with runners in scoring position (0-for-8) but Micah Hoffpauir's two-out, two-run homer in the seventh gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead.

As another Tribe season crashes and burns, change at the top should be on the agenda
Ladies and gentlemen, the captain has turned on the fasten-seat-belt signs as Cleveland Indians Flight 2009 is in its final descent into oblivion. Another season dead well before its time.In one of the most depressing weeks in the history of the franchise, the Tribe just completed an 0-6 week that has sealed their fate for this season and quite possibly the fate of their manager...
Golly-Wood ending
Maybe there was no way Cleveland Indians closer Kerry Wood could put into words what happened to him Saturday at Wrigley Field -- again. After all, the Cubs' three walk-off victories in the last three days have left a lot of people speechless. Wood had nothing to say after being victimized for a second consecutive day by a Cubs comeback. The Cubs scored twice against him in the...
Cubs Sweep! or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Kerry Wood.
When COI last left the Cubs, we were crying in our collective Lagunitas Hop Stoopid's (the Official Beer of COI), and hoping that JDot could break his curse of 13 loses in a row and that the Cubs could avoid being swept by the dreaded Meth Heads. Wow! What a difference a weekend makes.Similar to the TLFC and Jason Waddell, the COI trip to Flagstaff for the Made In The Shade Beer...
Game #72: Losing Streak Snapped as Huff and Sizemore Lead 5-4 Win Over Pirates
Who do you think breathed a bigger sigh of relief after Mark DeRosa made the final out Tuesday night in Pittsburgh - Eric Wedge or Kerry Wood? Either way, they probably both did, as Wood once again put the fear of another loss into Wedge and Indians fans across the country, only to finally [...]
Wood blows save as Cubs rally past Tribe in 13th
Andres Blanco hit a tying single and then scored the winning run on Kerry Wood's wild pitch in the 13th inning Saturday as the Cubs staged another wild comeback and beat the Cleveland Indians 6-5. Luis Valbuena hit his second homer of the game, a solo shot in the top of the 13th inning, to give the Indians a 5-4 lead. But once again Wood, the former Cubs ace who spent a decade...
Morning Update: June is Wedge Month.
First off, let us get this out of the way.Major props need to be handed out to Anthony Castrovince for his Surviving Wrigley Field Guide.I can only hope one day to think of something as clever as "The white 'W' flag that flies atop the scoreboard following a Cubs victory signifies 'Win,' not 'Wedge.'"I don't know what about it that is so good...
Cubs 4-5 Tigers: Bad Baseball Will Out
Zambrano pitched good enough to win, but Kevin Gregg had other ideas.
Hoffpauir looked completely clueless in his first three AB’s the hit a long, long HR to put the Cubs ahead in the top of the 8th. He, Soto, and Fukudome looked awful tonight (excepting the HR, of course), and Soto left the game in the 8th after taking a very awkward swing in his final AB. Derrek Lee continued...
The Comeback Cubs Strike Again ... A Wild Finish Against Woody - Cubs 6 Indians 5
Game Sixty-Four - Cubs 6 Indians 5 - 13 innings
WP - David Patton (3-1) LP - Kerry Wood (2-3, BS 4) Save - None
Entering Saturday the last three wins for the Chicago Cubs had been in walk-off fashion ... and after nearly four and a half hours of baseball Lou Piniella's crew did it again against a familiar face. Kosuke Fukudome entered the afternoon 0-for-his-last-22 and reportedly...
Cubs rally again, win, 6-5
Indians fall in 13th inning; Nats win on homer in 12th
Andres Blanco hit a tying single and then scored the winning run on Kerry Wood's wild pitch in the 13th inning Saturday as the host Chicago Cubs staged another wild comeback and beat the Cleveland Indians, 6-5.
Cubs feeling the pinch
Cubs closer Kevin Gregg sat in front of his locker, face buried in his hands, rewinding in his mind the final pitch he threw Tuesday.
''Geez, I could have hit that ball out of the park,'' Gregg said of pinch hitter Ryan Raburn's walk-off, two-run home run with one out in the ninth inning that gave the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 victory. ''That slipped out...
Four Veteran Players I'd Like to See Traded to a Better Team
We're just about forty percent done with the season so the teams in contention have mostly separated themselves from those out of contention. In an ideal world, the best players in baseball would still be playing their hearts out come September and October, so let me do my best to shift the rosters around a bit. Here's a list of four veteran players who deserve an upgrade...
