IRVING - Why? Because his defense was, for the most part, outstanding last night in Philadelphia. The Eagles came into the game averaging nearly 30 points, but the Cowboys held them to just 16 with one touchdown thanks to four sacks (two by Jay Ratliff), two interceptions and two stops (Bradie James, Marcus Spears) on third-and-one and fourth-and-one in the fourth quarter. Phillips did a great job calling blitzes and also developing a game plan that called for coverage to roll to DeSean Jackson. CB Terence Newman, with some help from safeties Gerald Sensabaugh and Ken Hamlin, limited Jackson to two catches for only 29 yards with Donovan McNabb targeting him five times.

Newman blows it - twice

PHILADELPHIA - Cowboys CB Terence Newman just dropped an interception inside the Eagles 30. Making matters worse, he kicked the ball afterward, drawing a 5-yard delay of game penalty.

Sensabaugh intecepts

PHILADELPHIA - The Eagles entered the game leading the league with 21 takeovers and a plus-12 turnover ratio, but the Cowboys have the game's first turnover. S Gerald Sensabaugh picked off a pass deflected off of Jeremy Maclin. It was only Donovan McNabb's second interception of the season.

Credit Newman for back-to-back sacks

PHILADELPHIA - Keith Brooking and Jay Ratliff recorded back to back sacks, but the credit should really go to Terence Newman. Donovan McNabb was looking to get the ball to DeSean Jackson both times, but Newman had the speedster covered step for step. I predicted the Eagles would win that matchup, but so far Newman has the upperhand.

Another day off for the 'Boys

IRVING - For the third-straight week, the players received a "Victory Monday" from Wade Phillips. That's NFL lingo for the coach giving the players the day off after a Sunday win. The Cowboys will make Bradie James available to the media via a conference call at 2:30 p.m. Thirty minutes later, Wade Phillips will meet with reporters.

Plenty of game balls to go around

PHILADELPHIA - The first one goes to Cowboys CB Terence Newman, who completely took DeSean Jackson out of the game. Jackson had only two catches for 29 yards after entering the game with four TD receptions of 50-plus yards. In a performance reminiscent of his shut-down job on Carolina's Steve Smith in Week 3, Newman made four tackles and broke up one pass. He did give up an...

Jenkins coming into his own

IRVING - Terence Newman got a lot of credit for shutting down DeSean Jackson on Sunday, but let's not forget that Mike Jenkins was just as good. The second-year cornerback took turns on both Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, helping the Cowboys hold the pair to just five catches for 73 yards. Jenkins' biggest moment came when he intercepted a Donovan McNabb pass late in the third...

Philadelphia's Jackson can block, too

Philadelphia's DeSean Jackson has built a reputation as a big-play peformer for his work as a receiver and kick-returner. Jackson showed in the third quarter that he can block, too. Jackson had a key block on LeSean McCoy's 45-yard catch-and-run play in third quarter. Jackson tied up Cowboys' cornerback Terence Newman and would not let him get free. McCoy's big...

Eagles' bonehead plays, decisions aided Cowboys

IRVING - Not to take anything away from the Cowboys, but they got plenty of help from the Eagles on Sunday night. From Andy Reid's questionable decisions to Moise Fokou's two crucial penalties, Philadelphia did what it could to give the game away. It was a double whammy for Reid when he decided to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the Dallas 45 with 11 minutes left in the...

McBriar neutralized Eagles

The Dallas Cowboys cornerbacks -- Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins -- prevented Philadelphia wide receiver DeSean Jackson from hitting on his trademark big plays in Sunday's game. Punter Mat McBriar took Jackson out of his return game. Jackson returned only one of five punts, for nine yards. The other four punts testified to McBriar's growing skills at hang time and directional...

PFW Edholm: Cowboys’ rookie class not getting it done

By Eric EdholmJerry Jones surprised many when he made a series of trades down in the draft to accumulate more picks. It was clear he believed the team needed more depth at a number of positions, but so far the 12-man draft class has come up short. Third-round LB Jason Williams, the top pick, hasn't played much since returning from injury. Fourth-round LB Victor Butler flashed...

Eagles have to settle for another field goal

PHILADELPHIA - The Eagles have only one TD this season on a drive that lasted 10 plays or more. On their last drive tonight, which lasted 12 plays, they had to settle for a 48-yard David Akers field goal, cutting the Cowboys lead to 7-6 with 1:38 left. With their explosive receivers shut down, the Eagles can't generate much offense other than an occasional solid gain by rookie...

Defense sets up points

Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb entered Sunday's play having thrown only one interception in 133 passes. The Cowboys doubled his total of interceptions in the first three quarters. Safety Gerald Sensabaugh picked off a deflected pass in the first quarter. Cornerback Mike Jenkins stole a throw in the third quarter. Each interception gave the Cowboys possession in Philadelphia...

Wade Phillips says officials made right call on fourth-and-one

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips had a different perspective than Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb on the key fourth-and-one play in the fourth quarter. McNabb said he ``felt like half my body was past the marker'' on the sneak. The officials disagreed, spotting the ball short of the first down. The Cowboys expected the sneak because the Eagles had run it earlier. So they packed...

Halfway Home

Maybe a "cloud" has hung over the Dallas Cowboys in past Decembers, as inside linebacker Bradie James suggested. But Wade Phillips' team sees only clear skies in the middle of November.
