I am just going to warn readers now, that if you are in favor of this and are offended by some team names, do not read any further.

For the last few years there has been a big push by select groups to change the nicknames of high schools, colleges and pro teams because of a perceived derogatory name. Now, for most of these schools, those nicknames are decades old, most since the inception of the school. So I don’t get why one person can get offended and force the history and tradition of a name to be changed.

It has happened in High schools and in colleges. But I will start with a couple examples from high schools in Texas. There is a high school in Tyler Texas, Robert E. Lee High which up until a few years ago, they were called the Rebels. Now, there is nothing offensive with the name Rebels and the fact that they had to change it Red Raiders is stupid. It is a part of history, and was a part of the tradition of the school.

The second example is from Frisco High school. They were known as the fightin coons, and they had a raccoon as their mascot. Call me dumb, but there is nothing wrong with that. But because one little person takes offense, it had to be changed to the raccoons. It is just irritating to change tradition because one person decides to be a pain in the butt. It is just tragic to think that these two schools had to change their tradition over someone being overly sensitive.

Now the NCAA is mandating that all of their schools with Indian nicknames change their names or face a backlash by the NCAA. I just don’t get this, how is having the name Indians or Redskins offensive? And why is a picture of an Indian offensive? It isn’t like they are portraying the Indian giving the business to a buffalo, or showing them taking a persons head off. It is just a name people! Get over yourselves and leave it alone.

I have to applaud North Dakota State, they are fighting the name change and one of their big time boosters has said if the name is changed, he will quit giving money to the school. I think this is great, but you also have schools like Florida State who are the Seminoles, and the Seminole Tribe gave the school their blessing to use the name. Why? Because it isn’t offensive, it is just a name and they aren’t making fun of the tribe.

Now there is talk of forcing professional teams to change their names also, If this happens than all hope is lost. Because nobody really cares if the team is called the indians, the only one who cares is some flunkie lawyer who found somone who was overly sensitive in some remote part of the country.

The next step in this idiotic cycle will be animal rights groups coming out and demanding that teams with animal names change that. Just because they feel it is offensive to be called the Wolverines or Tigers. It is about time someone just stand up and tell all of these groups to grow up and deal with it.
