Former Orioles pitcher Josh Towers was called up by the New York Yankees on Saturday from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees signed Towers to a minor league deal in May. He went 4-6 with a 3.42 ERA in 15 games, 14 starts, with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Towers is 45-55 with a 4.96 ERA in 137 big league games. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2007 with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Baltimore Orioles LHP Rich Hill had season-ending shoulder surgery Friday, manager Dave Trembley said. Hill was 3-3 with a 7.80 ERA in 14 games this year. Boston Red Sox David Ortiz said he never knowingly used steroids and that over-the-counter supplements and vitamins likely caused him to land on a 2003 list of alleged drug users.
