From Charley Walters:Mauer, 26, can become a free agent after the 2010 season. When contract talks get serious after this season, the Twins are expected to try to sign Mauer for about $120 million over seven years. The New York Yankees, however, with catcher Jorge Posada at 38 years old, are expected to offer more money and possibly more years. I look at the idea of Joe Mauer the same way I did with CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira, it's a no brainer. He's the best catcher in the game and in after next year the Yankees will likely need a long term catcher. Sure, their minor league system is stock with talent catchers like Jesus Montero, Austin Romine, and Kyle Higashioka, but none of them are Joe Mauer. He's the best catcher in the game and would be loved in New York. If the Twins are dumb enough to let him walk away the Yankees better be smart enough to swoop him up.
