Both the Chiefs and Redskins entered the game without their starting left tackles, but it was Kansas City that felt that absence most acutely in the opening quarter. The Redskins registered three sacks in the opening quarter, all coming over the Chiefs' left side, with Brian Orakpo, Chris Wilson and Andre Carter all getting to quarterback Matt Cassel. Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard, however. Kansas City twice drove deep into Redskins territory, the first time the beneficiaries of a Clinton Portis fumble and again after a nine-play drive moved them to Washington's 33-yard line.
