A Visit With An AFL Great

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak to one of the finest individuals in arena football today,Anthony Herron. This week i would like to share that conversation with you and invite all of you to tune to the NFL Networks coverage of Arena Football Friday Night, this weeks game features two rivals in Orlando and Tampa Bay. I am going to predict TAMPA BAY in a close one 45-40.

I am sure that you are aware the league has been criticized with names that are not fair but too many the league is enjoyable,do you think people will eventually enjoy the AFL as much as they do the NFL someday? I believe there are a lot of people who enjoy the AFl as much as the NFL. The distinction i think a number of AFL fans have is that the league is smaller because the NFL has been prominent for so long and has the best in the world competing in it. The AFL has a high level of competion that has built a fan base over the past 25 years that it can rediscover and it will continue to grow.

The old AFL from about four years ago had NFL notables like John Elway and Jerry Jones in it,the new AFL doesnt have the same,is this bad for the league? There was plenty of benefit to the past NFL ties but it seemed like it was tough for the AFL to position itself in comparision with the NFL. To have household names as owners is great but it is not a necessity for the league to be a sucess.

Do you think the AFL will have teams in every NFL city to carry on the year round tradition ? Very tough to say. There is so much that goes into placing an organization in an expansion market involving the right ownership ,scheduling, arena, etc. What i am confident of is that the AFL shouldnt make decisions for new teams based on where the NFL does or doesnt have teams.

This would have been better if I asked this question a year ago,do you think there are fans out there that are turned off by the fact that the AFL has too many teams in smaller markets? I dont believe so . Some smaller market teams like Des Moines IA and Spokane WA are where some of the most passionate fans are.

Next Week a look at SIRUIS RADIO as it returns to AFL coverage
