This is an old-school matchup: Pedro v Pettite. These two have never faced each other in the postseason, though their respective teams at the times (Yankees, Red Sox) faced each other in the ALCS in 99 and 2003 in some of the most dramatic postseason series in history. Let’s take a look at their numbers from those years 1999: 1999 was Pedro’s best season, and (probably, since I’m too lazy to look it up) one of the best pitching seasons in the history of baseball. Here are Pedro’s and Pettite’s stats PlayerIPSOBBFIPWAR Pedro213.1313371.3911.8 Pettite191.2121894.671.5 That’s one of the greatest seasons of all time for a pitcher. I mean, holy ****. 11 point ******* 8 WAR. Pettite is also a much more pedestrian pitcher than I remember from my youth. He did have a very good 1997 (2.96 FIP) but for the most part in his Yankee years he was very average. That is, until Roger Clemens joined the team and he started hanging out/working out with him (and perhaps doing other things). 2003 2003 was the year of the Aaron Boone extra-inning HR in game 7 (always one of the most exciting things in sports), not to mention the year where Pedro was left in a *little* too long against a Yankee lineup that could have ended up costing the Red Sox their first championship. Luckily for them (not really for anyone who has to interact with their fans on an even occasionaly basis) they won it the next year. Here were their numbers that year PlayerIPSOBBFIPWAR Pedro186.2206472.217.9 Pettite208.1180503.355.1 During their Yankee/Red Sox years, Pedro and Pettite matched up 6 times (though never in the playoffs). Fun fact: Pedro did match up with Roger Clemens three times in the playoffs. What matchups those were - arguably the two best pitchers in the history of baseball (Pedro’s peak and Clemens longevity) ant the peak of their careers. Pedro gets the edge for his 17K one-hitter though (dying laughing) Now, both of these guys aren’t quite as good as they once were, but are still decent pitchers. Here are their lines from this year PlayerIPSOBBFIPWAR Pedro44.23784.280.6 Pettite194.2148764.152.7 This should still be a fun matchup to watch.
