Former major league manager Manny Acta and San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria have emerged as candidates for the job as Chicago Cubs' manager a source familiar with the situation confirmed Monday. The Cubs continue to await word from Joe Girardi on whether he will sign a new deal with the New York Yankees. Acta 44 has managed the Washington Nationals (2007-09) and Cleveland Indians (2010-12). Acta a native of the Dominican Republic has been fired from both jobs but his reputation in working with young players fits what Cubs President Theo Epstein referred to in his news conference on Sept. 30 in seeking a candidate who chooses ''love before tough love.'' Renteria 51 has spent the past two seasons as the Padres' bench coach and was the manager for Mexico in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He has managed in the Marlins' and Padres' organization. Renteria a Southern California native was the 20th overall selection of the Pirates in the 1980 draft and played parts of five seasons with the Pirates (1986) Mariners (1987-88) and Marlins (1993-94) batting .237 in 184 games as an infielder.
