Yes its been said before this year, in fact its probably been said for quite some time now. But right now looks like possibly the best time for Alex Rodriguez to announce that he would effective immediately retire from professional baseball. He’s been on a steep decline since the 2010 season. Ending after that season might’ve been the smartest time to do it but since he is still playing, he’s causing a clog for the team just by being here.
While it’s obvious he can’t perform at his previously determined level, he can still be a pretty productive player (when healthy). But the fact of the matter is that the Yankees need more than just average productivity these days. It was recently announced that Mark Teixeira will have season ending wrist surgery. The Yankees are severely lacking in star power and A-rod is not going to help that problem by coming back and playing at an average level.
What they need is a new star, a new guy. They need that upcoming player to help out the team. Now they may have found someone who is good and could fit that role in Zoilo Almonte. But the fact of the matter is that they still need more, Derek Jeter will not be around much longer, that much is almost guaranteed. And Jayson Nix shouldn’t be the main stay at short-stop. They will also need to find a new permanent third baseman also, if Alex comes back and tries to play out the rest of his contract it could slow down that process.
Also with the most recent altercations between him and Brian Cashman things seemed to have reached an all-time low in relations between him and the Yankees organization. Now there are more rumors swirling that will no doubt cause even more rifts between himself and the team. Sure he’s done some amazing stuff for the team including winning an Most Valuable Player award.
But the bottom line is that now he’s causing a lot of problems for the team. He’s been tied to PEDs time and time again and now the investigation for them could come back to haunt him. It looks as if he might be more concerned with getting his money than helping his team. If he really wanted to help the New York Yankees he would walk away from professional baseball. Sadly someone who is probably one of the best players to ever step on a field has become a liability to a team that he was once such a great asset for.
