Alex Smith’s motivation this year will stem from the signing that never was. Peyton Manning had been brought in to meet with coach Jim Harbaugh, and toss some passes on the practice field. During this time Smith was wondering if Manning would supplant him as the starting quarterback of the NFC West division winning 49ers.
Smith told Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee:
“Certainly there are a lot of forms of motivation,” said Smith, who eventually signed a three-year deal with the 49ers. “I guess that’s there a little bit as far as motivation.”
Smith said there were no hard feelings with Harbaugh, but admitted it was “a little awkward.” The 49ers are lucky that Smith decided to use this as motivation, opposed to signing with the Miami Dolphins who he met with. I speak for all 49er nation, when I say I never thought I’d mutter those words out. In a day where athletes always feel disrespected, it’s a somewhat surprise Smith didn’t say bye to the team he brought to the NFC Championship game. I have a feeling Smith is in for a good year.

ON SECOND THOUGHT...
49ers QB Alex Smith admitted he "got carried away" when making comments critical of Panthers QB Cam Newton, but maintained that for him, "it's about winning games."
The new Broncos quarterback apparently loves how the team has transferred its 500-page playbook, DVDs, etc. on to iPads that boast 64 gigabytes of data.

Forget Madden video game covers, our quarterback is on the cover of a cereal box.
Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning appears on the Wheaties boxes being sold in Colorado, according our friends at Bronco Planet. The box, with Wheaties’ fittingly orange background, shows Manning in workout attire with a football in hand.
Back in May, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith was quoted saying the following:
“I could absolutely care less on yards per game. I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games...
Alex Smith got into some hot water for singling-out Cam Newton with some comments, but he seems to be backtracking now.
Upstart 49ers quarterback Alex Smith admitted yesterday that San Francisco’s pursuit of future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning when he was a free agent last winter was “a little awkward” and will serve as additional motivation for him this autumn. … Continue reading →
The San Francisco 49ers and Smith were slow to agree to a contract deal. And before they did, the 49ers pursued Peyton Manning, who eventually chose to sign with the Broncos. Smith today re-iterated that there were no hard feelings between him and Harbaugh. But he did allow that the episode was "a little awkward" and will serve as motivation. "Certainly there are a...
We haven't seen Peyton Manning throw a touchdown pass since January 8, 2011. That's when the New York Jets beat the Indianapolis Colts in an AFC wild-card playoff game, long before a string of neck surgeries led to Manning's year-long hiatus and a major career shift. The big question for the Denver Broncos is whether they have a fully healthy Peyton Manning or a shadow...
The Denver Broncos are among a growing list of teams that have tossed their monster paper playbooks and switched to the iPad.
Using the iPad is not mandatory this season but Broncos video director Steve Boxer told FOXSports.com that 90 percent of the team has made the switch.
One big fan of the iPad playbook is Peyton Manning. “Peyton loves it,” Boxer told FOX Sports...

Peyton Manning Looking Good
49ers quarterback Alex Smith probably knows that he was a Peyton Manning signing away from being another teams backup. As with many athletes who dont think before they speak, Smiths comments about Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton comparing passing yards to winning have come back to haunt him. I could absolutely care less on yards per game, Smith said in May. I...
In late April, "Around the League" pointed out how the Denver Broncos were among a growing list of teams scraping their monster-sized playbooks for the iPad. Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams was even kind enough to show the Internets the playbook function of the device, much to the chagrin of head coach John Fox. The Broncos are now three months in, and the change has received...
