Alex Smith’s motivation this year will stem from the signing that never was. Peyton Manning had been brought in to meet with coach Jim Harbaugh, and toss some passes on the practice field. During this time Smith was wondering if Manning would supplant him as the starting quarterback of the NFC West division winning 49ers.

Smith told Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee:

“Certainly there are a lot of forms of motivation,” said Smith, who eventually signed a three-year deal with the 49ers. “I guess that’s there a little bit as far as motivation.”

Smith said there were no hard feelings with Harbaugh, but admitted it was “a little awkward.” The 49ers are lucky that Smith decided to use this as motivation, opposed to signing with the Miami Dolphins who he met with. I speak for all 49er nation, when I say I never thought I’d mutter those words out. In a day where athletes always feel disrespected, it’s a somewhat surprise Smith didn’t say bye to the team he brought to the NFC Championship game. I have a feeling Smith is in for a good year.

Alex Smith: I Got Carried Away with Comments About Cam Newton

Back in May, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith was quoted saying the following: “I could absolutely care less on yards per game. I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games...

Broncos QB Peyton Manning's Arm Reportedly Close To '90 Percent'

We haven't seen Peyton Manning throw a touchdown pass since January 8, 2011.
