Thursday’s qualifying session at Charlotte Motor Speedway produced an all-Petty Motorsports front row for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the track.
Aric Almirola got the No. 43 RPM Ford around the track in 27.988 seconds to claim his first-career Sprint Cup pole.
“It’s really special to get my first pole at Charlotte,” Almirola said of claiming the first starting spot at the track that’s considered to be NASCAR’s “home track.”
Almirola was the only driver to post a sub-28-second lap during the qualifying session.
His teammate, Marcos Ambrose in the No. 9 RPM Ford, posted the second-fastest lap time of 28.184 seconds to claim the other front row starting spot for Sunday’s race. It’ll be Ambrose’s first top-10 start at Charlotte.
Jimmie Johnson claimed the third starting spot with a 28.217-second qualifying lap in the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.
