With Beyonce handling the halftime show at Super Bowl XLVII at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Feb. 3, the Associated Press is reporting that the National Football League has tapped soulful singer-songwriter Alicia Keys to handle the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before kickoff. The NFL has yet to confirm Keys as the anthem singer and the individual who told the AP spoke on the condition of anonymity.
As far as the decision to have Keys sing the anthem is concerned, I could take her or leave her. Don’t get me wrong, she’s extremely talented and will likely do a phenomenal job with it. That’s the problem with picking Keys: She’s a low-risk, high-reward selection. She’s a great singer and has had a low incidence of drama in her successful career. Not that I blame the NFL for going this way with it, but I’d much rather have someone with some inherent risk, where the chance for an epic meltdown or embarrassing gaffe is always a possibility.
So, with that in mind, here’s my question: Why not have Christina Aguilera do it again? Now, that is the kind of train wreck we’d all love to watch careening perilously down the tracks, right?
