UFC Middleweight Chael Sonnen

As the old adage goes, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Or better yet, as George W. Bush once brilliantly said, “There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — [pause] — shame on you. Fool me — [pause] — You can’t get fooled again.”

Can Chael Sonnen (Pictured) possibly get duped into another Hail Mary triangle-armbar submission by UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva?

Will “The Spider” be planted on his back in their highly-anticipated rematch like he was at UFC 117?

“To say this guy is superior to me is a joke,” Sonnen stated. “Look at the statistics from the first fight. I out-landed him by over 200 punches, I took him down at will, I passed his guard at will and I beat him on the feet too.”

Sonnen’s actually not just bumping his gums this time. The chatty challenger has hard data to back up his claims. According to FightMetric, Uncle Chael landed 252 more strikes than Silva in their August 2010 tango, with a total of 320 punches, kicks, elbows and knees finding the mark.

He completed three takedowns, keeping Silva staring up at the ceiling for a total of 20 minutes. That’s twice as long as the Brazilian has been on his back during his entire Octagon career.

Sonnen also passed Silva’s guard into side-control six times and swept him as well. In addition, Chael P. out-struck Silva during the three minutes that their tango was contested standing up.

However, the champion professes the only stat that counts is 1-0.

“He took me down, he is good at wrestling. Okay. Good. But I punch him in the face ‘BAP! BAP! BAP! BOOM!’ and that is it. I win. That’s it,” Silva stated. “No different from the first fight on Saturday. I win!”

UFC 148 takes place this weekend inside MGM Grand Garden Areana. The 185-pound sequel headlines the pay-per-view broadcast.
