Scottsdale Police on Wednesday arrested two suspects in the stabbing death of former Arizona State football player Tyrice Thompson. Ian MacDonald, 26, of Tempe was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, and and Samantha B. King, 22, of Gilbert was arrested on suspicion of assault and hindering prosecution. According to a police report, King is MacDonald's girlfriend. MacDonald was previously arrested but released for lack of evidence. Thompson, 27, who played receiver and tight end for ASU from 2003 to 2007, was working as a bouncer at Martini Ranch in Scottsdale on Jan. 27 when a fight broke out around 1 a.m. In the melee, Thompson suffered five stab wounds from which he died the following Saturday. Police could not initially determine who stabbed Thompson or find a knife at the scene but arrested MacDonald the Tuesday following the incident. Further investigation led police back to MacDonald. Interviews with club employees and witnesses determined MacDonald and King engaged in a fight with Thompson outside the club, with no other persons near the altercation. The police report states King told police MacDonald was the only person fighting Thompson. She admitted to pulling Thompson's hair while he was on top of MacDonald, jumping on Thompson's back and hitting him in the face. She denied any involvement in the stabbing or knowledge of MacDonald having stabbed Thompson. While MacDonald denied to police he had stabbed Thompson, police apparently learned in interviews with friends of MacDonald he had admitted to the stabbing and asked for help disposing of the knife. Police believe the knife was discarded in a dumpster in Mesa, but the weapon has not yet been recovered. MacDonald was arrested and transported to a MCSO jail for arraignment. King was booked and released. MacDonald's Facebook page, as identified by his and King's booking photos, revealed he is a member of the United States Marine Corps and featured photos of him and King at a bar on January 26, the evening of the stabbing. Funeral services for Thompson will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1401 E. Jefferson St., Phoenix. Thompson's family has established a memorial fund to help cover funeral costs and support Thompson's survivors. Contributions to the Tyrice Thompson Memorial Fund can be made at any Comerica Bank location, using account number 8002373853. More information can be found here.
