Athletics right-hander Jarrod Parker is a late scratch from his scheduled start against the Texas Rangers. Less than an hour before Sunday's series finale, AL West-leading Oakland said Parker (11-6) wouldn't pitch because of illness. Left-hander Tommy Milone, who made his first career relief appearance Wednesday, took over as the starter. The A's also said Yoenis Cespedes, who was batting fourth and set to be the designated hitter in the original lineup, wouldn't play because of his shoulder. Parker is 9-0 in his last 19 starts since a loss at Texas on May 22. His winning streak is the longest by an Oakland pitcher since Dan Haren in 2008. The last Athletics pitcher with a longer unbeaten streak was Lefty Grove's 21 in a row in 1931.

8 Crazy Nights: When Will the A’s Clinch the West?

Ozzie Canseco named ULB Manager of the Year

You have to give it to the Canseco brothers, if anything, they love the game of baseball. At least that's the image they portray. Jose Canseco may be the Godfather of performance enhancers, but he did start the process that has cleaned up the game, the likes we have never seen. Ozzie Canseco was never the player his brother was. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the...

When striking out might not be a good thing

Strikeout rates have steadily risen in Major League Baseball, which just about everybody knows. And there has been much written about whether the increase is bad or not. But when you consider that the MLB strikeout rate is now at 7.51 per nine innings and compare that to 6.52 per nine just seven years ago, you have a significant culture change. I have had people tell me that an out...
