I'm sorry for the delay with these, but boy, today was intriguing as can be. For me, attending Red Wings practices is like going to a third or fourth-semester college class on hockey, and watching the drills--even if I don't understand them--is exciting as all hell get out. I will admit that Mike Babcock slashed me on the ass and told me I'd freeze it off because I wasn't wearing a jacket, but I happen to be fine wearing short-sleeve shirts at the irnk. Ahead of tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins (7 PM, WPCW), the game day players practiced first, some prospects and the vast majority of the Griffins' AHL'ers practiced simultaneously at "David's Rink," and after a short break, tomorrow's roster--Alfredsson, Weiss, Franzen, Sheahan, Nyquist, Bertuzzi, Jurco, Athanasiou, Callahan, Emmerton, Miler, Eaves, Paetsch, Lashoff, Kronwall, Ericsson, Ouellet, Sproul, Nicastro, Nedomlel, Coreau and Gustavsson (Babcock says goalies wil...

Cleary signing has Babcock's fingerprints

Since my return from Detroit Red Wings training camp in Traverse City, Mich., Ive been bombarded with questions about the Daniel Cleary signing, why it was allowed to become such a prolonged saga -- especially for a player on the downside of his career. Clearys signing has less to do with the hockey player and more to do with the coach, Mike Babcock. By most accounts, Red Wings...

Detroit Red Wings win preseason opener over Pittsburgh Penguins

Hockey is back! Well not on local television just yet, but the Detroit Red Wings have opened up their September scrimmages with a strong 4-1 win in Pittsburgh. Couldn’t find a video feed to watch your Red Wings, don’t worry I got you covered. Here are my takeaways from the “first game of the season.” Tatar making his case Tomas Tatar gets the offensive going halfway through...

NHL Preview: Best players in the Atlantic Division

Pavel Datsyuk dangling around the goalie, scoring a goal. (Photo credit: AP/Donna McWilliam) The weather is cooling, blades are sharpening, ice is freezing, banging and swishing sounds of washers and dryers cleaning franchise paraphernalia are heard, and jerseys are being mounted in locker rooms across the country. This can mean only one thing – the NHL is back for another entertaining...

Video: Tomas Tatar Scores Detroit Red Wings’ First Preseason Goal

Tomas Tatar’s spot on the Detroit Red Wings’ roster has been one of the hottest talking points early in training camp. GM Ken Holland said that Tatar will be among the 14 forwards to open the regular season … but if Tatar still needs to earn that spot he’s off to a good start. Tatar lit the lamp 12:56 into the first period of the Wings’ exhibition opener at Pittsburgh,...

Red Wings' Ken Holland says Tomas Tatar 'probably' will make the cut; lineup for preseason opener

Tomas Tatar who has expressed concerns this week about possibly being traded due to the Detroit Red Wings' abundance of forwards might not need to worry. General manager Ken Holland gave the young forward a vote of confidence on Sunday saying he'll likely make the roster. Tatar has looked good in training camp. "It's an important preseason for a guy like Tats because...

Roger Mussa: Welcome Mr. Brunner - What does it mean to the Devils?

***Follow me on Twitter @NJDAdvocate Uncle Lou strikes again... Camp has barely started and a PTO has been extended to Damien Brunner. As surprised as I am he is still unsigned, I do think this match has been orchestrated throughout the summer between Uncle Lou and Brunner's camp. Was Brunner priced out of the market and missed the boat due to a high asking price? Was...

Red Wings morning news: on antsy Wings, the 2nd line, Abdelkader, Tatar and ‘jersey rules’

The Red Wings did speak with the media regarding the result of their Red vs. White game, but the headlines of the day kind of eclipsed the players' "end of camp" quips. Thankfully, the Traverse City Record-Eagle's Chris Dobrolowski snagged some quips regarding training camp itself, with one of the players slated to skate tonight against Pittsburgh (7 PM, WPCW...

Barlcay Goodrow turns down AHL offer from Wings, heads back to North Bay

I witnessed Ken Holland, Ryan Martin and Jiri Fischer have "a talk" with camp try-out Barclay Goodrow on Monday, and 100% of the time, that's a "fish or cut bait" sign, but I chose not to ask them about their discussion as I'm still a little overly polite. Yahoo Sports' Neate Sager found out what happened via the North Bay-Nippising News... Captain...

Impressions from day 3 of the Red Wings’ training camp: oh, it was complicated

The first day of the Red Wings' training camp involved an emphasis on positioning and puck retrievals. The second involved transition play through the neutral zone and power play drills. While Wings coach Mike Babcock gave me a healthy sneer when I suggested that after today--the Red vs. White game takes place tomorrow at 11, and after that, the Wings will reassign most of...

Audio from the last day of Red Wings training camp: Kronwall, Cleary, Babcock, Datsyuk and much more

The Red Wings will get a full day off after playing the Chicago Blackhawks this evening (8 PM EDT, no TV, WGN Radio), but the gents were hard at work in terms of both the players taking part in the game-day skate--minus Johan Franzen, who has a hip flexor issue--and the non-game-day guys, minus Brendan Smith, who has a wee groin tweak. At this point in the exhibition season, the...

Almquist scores 2 PP goals in 2nd period for Wings

Adam Almquist scored two power-play goals in the second period and Tomas Tatar had a goal and assist to lead the Detroit Red Wings past the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on Monday night in a preseason game. Paval Datsyuk also scored for Detroit, netting a second-period, unassisted goal. Almquist scored at 6:10 and 11:50 with shots from the point to put the Red Wings ahead 3-1. Brandon...

From Journeyman to Superman by @pandapsu

From Journeyman to Superman  Picture an NHL player who was undrafted and then finally makes it to the NHL. He shows flashes of greatness, but hits a rough patch and shuffles between four different teams in a two-year period. Most of us would probably guess this story would result in the player’s career coming to a quiet end, perhaps meddling in the minor leagues for its...

Red Wings morning report: Wings-Pens-Hawks, defensive present and future, Howard and coverage gnus

The Red Wings' 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins wasn't exactly a thing of beauty, but for a game in which the Red Wings were really just getting their feet under them, the team played very solidly. As noted in the quick take, Adam Almquist scored two goals and Pavel Datsyuk scored a beauty, and as NHL.com's highlights are still a mess in terms of embedding, we'...

Adam Almquist scores pair of power-play goals as Wings win exhibition opener

Adam Almquist scored two power-play goals in the second period and Tomas Tatar had a goal and assist to lead the Red Wings past the Penguins 4-1 on Monday night in the exhibition opener Pavel Datsyuk also scored for Detroit netting a second-period unassisted goal. Evgeni Malkin Hockey Pool Picks 2013 2014

Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the #4 forward points-only hockey pool pick. He is a Russian born center who is 27 years old. He is an outstanding playmaker and sniper. With James Neal on his line, he is going to make an impact for your fantasy team. Malkin has historically racked up more points when Sidney Crosby has been out of the lineup. A downside to drafting is he has
