The surging Buffalo Sabres suddenly find themselves just outside the Eastern Conference playoff picture. The Colorado Avalanche have used an impressive run of their own to climb into the mix in the West. With both teams seeking a third consecutive win, the visiting Avalanche and Sabres meet for the only time this season Wednesday night. Buffalo (33-29-8), which sat in a last-place tie in the conference Feb. 18, has since used a 9-2-1 run to climb into ninth. The Sabres picked up another two points and inched closer to the East's final postseason berth with Monday's 3-2 overtime win over Montreal. Left wing Tyler Ennis scored twice, and after Ryan Miller allowed the tying goal with five seconds left in regulation, defenseman Tyler Myers found the back of the net 2:01 into OT. "Two months ago, I would say it would've been very tough with our group," Myers said. "But I think we've come a very long, long way ... the way we responded was a big sign of life with our group. "Definitely big in the sense that we got the two points. Every game here on out is gonna be a crucial game for us. It's so tight, it's gonna come right down to the end, we gotta battle for every two points." Miller finished with 26 saves and helped kill both of the Canadiens' power-play opportunities. Buffalo hasn't allowed a power-play goal in a season-high nine straight games. "Right now we're looking for positives to build on and wins to build on," said Miller, who improved to 9-1-1 with a 1.78 goals-against average in his last 11 starts. "(Monday) was a good win, we'll throw that scramble out the window, we got the two points we needed and we'll build for the next one." Keeping things going, however, likely won't be easy against Colorado (37-30-4), which is one of a handful of teams vying for the last couple of postseason spots in the West. The Avalanche improved to 4-1-0 over their last five with Monday's 3-2 overtime win over Anaheim. After blowing its second one-goal lead late in the third period, Colorado won on rookie forward Gabriel Landeskog's 19th goal of the season. "We're in playoff mode already, and we've been in playoff mode the last couple of weeks," Landeskog said. "We just have to keep it going." Semyon Varlamov made 38 saves and has gone 7-2-0 with a 1.32 GAA and two shutouts over his last nine games, surrendering more than two goals once over that stretch. "When he's on his game, he's tough to beat because he's so athletic," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "He's good." Varlamov went 2-0-0 while allowing one goal in his two most recent matchups against Buffalo while with Washington. Miller is 0-1-2 with a 2.55 GAA in three career meetings with the Avalanche. He turned away 30 shots in a 4-3 overtime road loss Jan. 4, 2011. Colorado has taken all four contests in the series since 2006-07, with each of the last three going past regulation. The Avalanche lead the West with a combined 14 overtime and shootout victories. The Sabres, 11-2-4 over their last 17 games at First Niagara Center, are riding a season-best five-game home winning streak. Buffalo hasn't won six in a row on its own ice since Jan. 17-Feb. 15, 2007.

Buffalo Sabres’ Tyler Myers expected to be suspended today

Buffalo Sabres Tyler Myers will certainly be issued a suspension today, as the NHL Department of Safety have scheduled a hearing with the 6 foot, 8 inch defenseman. Myers receives a bit of a bump, and dishes out a leaning hit with a bit of elbow in the mix for good measure in the Buffalo zone. It’s a clear suspension for the 22-year-old. He’s not a real tough customer...

Sabres D Myers suspended 3 games by NHL

The Buffalo Sabres will have to continue their playoff push without top defenseman Tyler Myers, who has been suspended without pay by the NHL for three games for an illegal hit from behind. League disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan issued the ruling Tuesday, after holding a hearing with Myers over a minor boarding penalty he received in the third period of a 3-2 overtime win against...

Sabres LW Matt Ellis out indefinitely

Buffalo Sabres fourth-line forward Matt Ellis is out indefinitely after hurting his knee last weekend. Without calling the injury season-ending, coach Lindy Ruff said Ellis will miss an extended period as Buffalo prepared to host Montreal on Monday night. Ellis was hurt in a 4-3 shootout win at Ottawa on Saturday. The Sabres will also be minus defenseman Andrej Sekera for an uncertain...

Sabres overcome late Habs goal

Given how poorly Buffalo was playing two months ago, defenseman Tyler Myers is certain it would have let this one slip away. It's a much different story in March, now that the surging Sabres have climbed back in the hunt for a playoff spot. Buffalo allowed the tying goal with 5 seconds left in regulation, but Myers scored 2:01 into overtime to secure a 3-2 win over the Montreal...

GARTH: Enzo and Mysie Sink The Habs

Crowd noise wasn't a problem inside First Niagara Center on Monday night. Tyler Ennis scored two beauties, while Ryan Miller made 26 saves as the Sabres earned its season-best fifth consecutive home win. The Sabres (33-29-8) also improved to 9-2-2 in their past 13 games. Miller is 9-1-1 in his last 11 starts. Look out Winnipeg! The Sabres are now in ninth place in the Eastern Conf...

GARTH: Vanek, Kaleta, Foligno In

The good news from Sabres game day skate: Thomas Vanek will play tonight in this most important game versus the Montreal Canadiens. This Johnny Boychuk demolition caused a re-aggravation of Vanek's upper body injury. Its believed that Vanek first injured his shoulder back in Montreal in February when he was hit by Erik Cole. Pat Kaleta's neck injury...

TEnnis Rules

I don’t ever really watch tennis but I do think that their players, just like NHL players, are unbelievably underrated in the world of sports.  The lame-stream (I just invented that!) sports media is so hung up on things like the vertical leap, 40 Yard dash and how ‘ripped’ a guy is they completely ignore one of the most important aspects of athletecism:  Stamina...

GARTH: Cut The Gap

Greetings from the ted darling Memorial Press Box. It won't be easy, but the Sabres look to beat the Canadiens in regulation tonight. A Buffalo win will cut the four point gap between Washington and Buffalo to two points. The Caps and Jets are idle tonight. Sabres Scratches: Sekera (pneumonia), Ellis (knee), McCormick (head) **** Thomas Vanek looked...

Kevin Freiheit: Sabres/Canadiens

This is the fifth meeting between the teams this season. So far, the Sabres have gone 3-0-1 against the Canadiens. Buffalo have finished each game with exactly three goals, but have kept Montreal at two or less three times. The Sabres are coming off of a shootout win in Ottawa after trailing three times during the game. Tyler Ennis finished off Ben Bishop in the Senators, giving...

GARTH: Backdoor Scam

Play with fire, and you're gonna get burned. On Monday night, the Sabres lost a one goal lead in the final seconds of regulation to the Montreal Canadiens. The Sabres would shake-off their 6 on 5 blunder to win the game in OT when Tyler Myers beat Peter Budaj with a wicked wrister in OT. Fast forward to Wednesday night, when Rookie Of The Year, Gabriel Landeskog was granted...

GARTH: McNasty Recalled

From the office of redundancy department.... Brayden McNabb has been recalled to fill the huge skates of Tyler Myers.

Fantasy Hockey ONE (3/13)

Sometimes we roll out old footage for a reason and last night was just one of those nights up until the Nashville-Phoenix game.  Maybe it was just us but every other game had some excitement but just did not wow us, maybe aside from the Buffalo ending with Tyler Myers scoring the game winner. However, there were a few fantasy standouts from last nignt and we should...
