It’s 2010 all over again. The Texas Longhorns have only played three games, but it sure feels like an epidemic worse than the zombie apocalypse has rained down upon Austin. What happened to doubt-digit wins? Where is the Big 12 crown? What happened to a defense that remained near the top in the nation? So many questions, but the issues aren’t solely placed on one factor; however Longhorn fans are demanding answers. The same questions have been raised all week. How is it possible a program that can hand pick recruits, and pulls in more revenue than any other program in the nation hasn’t made a trip back to the BCS since the 2009 BCS Championship?Offensively the problems seem pretty clear. Andy Staples from Sports Illustrated wrote the best theory on what exactly is wrong. Is his column, Staples alludes back to something head coach Mack brown told him in 2010."I was scared to death of wind and rain with Colt," Brown said, "because we had lost our ability to run." Is any more explanation needed? It seems so obvious if you’ve watched this offense the last four years. In 2010, the Horns ranked 7th in the Big 12 in rushing. This of course was right after Brown decided to turn Texas into a pro-style run oriented offense. The previous two years Texas finished 3rd (2011) and 5th (2012). Has the production been horrible? No, but with the amount of talent in the backfield the Horns should be running through the conference at the top. What's even more revealing in Brown's comments is, he basically admits that he and his staff neglected to teach the basic fundamentals. They ignored every other aspect of offense because they had an offense centered on Vince Young and then Colt McCoy. The defense, however, is such an enigma. Former defensive coordinator Will Muschamp's 2010 defense was ranked 6th nationally, and even during Manny Diaz's first year leading the defense, the Horns still were the best defense in the conference. So how did a defense that held teams to just 4.6 yards per play in 2011, fall so far down in production in 2012 (68th in total defense)? Answering what happened is simple, the cause, however, is difficult to decipher. Obviously the defense has been a major weakness. It's no secret just how bad the tackling has been. It truly is an atrocious display. ESPN Stats & Info shows just how bad the unit has been in 2013 alone. 42% of their opponents' rushing yards have come after contact. What's even worse, they have the second most missed/broken tackles among AQ schools.  Texas has also allowed 50 of its opponents’ 155 runs to gain at least five yards before being contacted, nine more than any other AQ schools. How has this happened? The coaching staff hasn't been developing their players. Is it that simple? Maybe, maybe not, but it certainly is an on going issue with the program. Scouting can also be the problem. Staples also points to just how late Texas has been in developing their personnel department. Mack Brown didn't know that just about every program had their own strength coach exclusively for football. Athletic director DeLoss Dodds only recently began opening up the check book to fund what other programs like the Alabama Crimson Tide and Ohio State Buckeyes have been doing for a few years. Employing additional personnel to help the coaching staff is a new concept to the school. What other conclusion can we draw from the fact the program has fallen behind in the times other than the people in charge have become too entitled and figure they can just get the job done because they are Texas?
