It seems, perhaps, that theres no such thing as too many awards. Reports began to circulate on Friday that the NBA would be adding one more award to its yearly cadre of honors, and on Sunday, the speculation as to what said award would entail ended. NBA.coms Steve Aschburner reported that it is the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award, and that it will be presented before Sundays game in Miami to one of 12 nominees. Among the nominees is the Clippers Chauncey Billups, who is the only Los Angeles player on the list. Brooklyns Jerry Stackhouse, Clevelands Luke Walton, Denvers Andre Iguodala, Golden States Jarrett Jack, Indianas Roy Hibbert, Miamis Shane Battier, New Orleans Roger Mason Jr., New Yorks Jason Kidd, Oklahoma Citys Serge Ibaka and San Antonios Manu Ginobili round out the list of nominees. Billups spent much of the 2012-13 season injured, and he played in just 22 regular-season games, starting each. He was healthy for the Clippers six-game playoff run, starting each of those games, as well. In the fifteenth season of his career, Billups averaged 8.4 points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists, and he is an unrestricted free agent this summer. The winner of the award was voted on by NBA players, who were not permitted to vote for their teammates. (Its an understandable sentiment at face value, but still, kind of odd, considering the nature of the award and all.) The award is named for Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes, who played together in the 1950s from the Rochester and Cincinnati Royals. The two had a bond that extended beyond basketball and have come to be known as the consummate teammates.
