When Al Jefferson had to be helped off the court Friday night during the Bobcats’ preseason game against the Heat after suffering a sprained ankle, it looked far from optimistic for the Bobcats and their fans. As reported by Brett Pollakoff of NBCSports.com through the Associated Press, Jefferson as on crutches wearing a walking boot on Saturday. X-rays on the ankle were negative and he’ll be re-evaluated later this week. But Jefferson is looking to return by opening day. “I’m going to do my best to be back for opening night,” Jefferson said before the Bobcats played the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night. “I’m going to take it one day at a time and go through the process. I’ve sprained my ankle so many times, I just know how it goes.” With Jefferson not in the lineup and potentially not ready by opening day, coach Steve Clifford knows the team might have to change their game plan at the offensive end of the court. “Obviously, it’s not ideal, but it’s part of being on a team.  It changes a little bit in terms of our master plan in terms of how we would implement offense, the order we would go. We’d been spending a lot of time obviously on the post-up aspect of it.” Jefferson was signed during the off season to a 3-year, $40 million contract.  He has been consistent and quite durable, playing in all games in 2011 and missing only a few games over the past six seasons. Jefferson has played for the Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz over his nine-year career. Last year he averaged 17.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Jefferson has career averages of 16.4 points and 9 rebounds per game.  The Bobcats hope for more of the same from Jefferson this season after his recovery from the ankle injury.
